Chanced upon the new Two Islands Gelato that had recently set-up shop in the Central Business District whilst walking to around the area to settle our lunch. Located in Far East Square, Two Islands Gelato had taken over the former premises of a floral shop — a space that is somewhat more of a kiosk that is situated beside the walkway that leads up to Amoy Hotel within Far East Square. On first sight, it does seem like quite a ballsy move for any gelato shop to open an outlet in the immediate are; one would imagine that there isn’t much demand for gelato amongst office workers. Turns out, Two Islands Gelato is actually a concept by Two Islands Dairy — a small batch gelato maker that does retail pints via food delivery platforms; the brand name is said to be founded by an individual whom had lived in both New Zealand and Singapore, with themselves claiming that the gelato are churned using New Zealand grass-fed dairy with an incorporation of flavours that are Singapore-inspired. Two Islands Gelato operates as a kiosk; this means that there is no dine-in space that is dedicated to its operations. While Two Islands Dairy only retails their gelato in pints, Two Islands Gelato serves up their gelato by the scoop; the scoops of gelato coming in a cup by default, though one could opt for a cone at an extra charge. The opening of Two Islands Gelato can be said as a move to provide Two Islands Dairy with more exposure, considering how it allows patrons to be able to give their gelatos a try at a reasonable price on-the-go without needing to commit to an entire pint.
There were quite a number of flavours of gelato offered by Two Islands Gelato at the kiosk; while there were a number of more conventional flavours such as that of the Belgian Chocolate, Japanese Hokkaido Milk and the Pure Sicilian Pistachio, just to name a few, there are also some rather interesting and unique flavour combinations out here that includes the Cinnamon Chocolate Fudge. Upon skimming through the various flavours that Two Islands Gelato has in stock in their display freezer at the kiosk, we found ourselves opting for the Camomile Honey Milk Tea flavour; something which we found to be rather unique — we had also opted to go with the choice of having the cone with our choice of gelato as well. The Camomile Honey Milk Tea gelato turned out to be less “milk tea” than what we had expected; in fact, the Camomile Honey Milk Tea gelato would probably suit the taste buds of those whom prefer lighter tasting, but milkier gelato instead. The milk base carries quite an evident note here, while the gelato also comes with a light hint of floral aroma and was also subtly sweet from the addition of honey; both of which being very complimenting flavour profiles. It was a pity that the gelato felt like it was stored at a temperature that was a little too cold; the gelato had a rather icy texture throughout and was less creamy than we expected even though that texture was pretty consistent throughout the entire scoop. While the waffle cone does come decently crisp, the waffle cone does seem to be of the commercially-made sort; a bit sugary on its own, and a little “skinny” and hence doesn’t quite hold as much gelato as we had expected. Overall, still a pretty interesting addition to the Central Business District; definitely works as a respite for office workers whom are craving for a cool treat whilst making their way back to the office after lunch.
