There seems to be quite something about new gelato parlours that are situated in Bedok recently — we had recently made our visit to the new Micro Creamery which shares its space with Les Mains Bakehouse at 47 Jalan Tua Kong. Scrolling through social media one day, we have also come across the new Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato that is located at a far more accessible area at Blk 740 Bedok Reservoir Road. For those whom find the address being remotely familiar, this is also the same neighbourhood where one would find other dining establishments such as that of Reiwa Soba Honten 令和十割そば本店 and the very first outlet of Burp Kitchen & Bar being located at. Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato takes over the former space that had been vacated by the now-defunct Haute and Cauld; another ice-cream parlour which had been operating in the shop space since 2020. For those whom has been to the now-defunct Haute and Cauld, the entire space seemed to have been through quite a revamp; most of the neon lighting and other decor has been stripped out — the interior of Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato can be said as rather bare and simple, with the furnishings being more function over form. Being primarily a gelato parlour, Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato does serve up a good variety of different gelato stocked up in its display chiller located at the counter, split between Classic and Premium categories — patrons can opt to have the gelato with in either a cup or a cone, or enjoy them with a buttermilk waffle. Aside from its gelato offerings though, Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato also offer some savoury items such as toasties as well for those whom are feeling a bit peckish. Beverages available at Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato would include a small variety of tea, as well as espresso-based coffee.

Having had a meal before making our way down to Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato, it was needless to say that the item which we were eyeing upon when skimming through the menu would be its gelato offerings with their buttermilk waffle. We found ourselves going for the Scoopy Two — the Scoopy Two is being described on the menu as a combo that comprises of 1 Buttermilk Waffle and 2 Classic Scoopy; the “Scoopy” referring to scoops of gelato here; one can also go for the Premium Scoopy at a top-up of $0.50 per flavour. We eventually found ourselves opting for the Honey Chrysanthemum and the Açai Yogurt gelatos to go along with the buttermilk waffle; our choice of the complimentary topping being Biscoff cookies crumbs, while we went for the maple syrup for our choice of sauces. The buttermilk waffle at Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato was pretty well-made; this one does seemingly lack of a crisp exterior but is one that is airy, soft and plush — all that without being particularly dense as well. There was a lingering fragrance of buttermilk with the buttermilk waffle; this was well-complimented with the topping and sauce that we had opted for — the combination of biscoff and maple syrup being a classic duo that provides a sweet note to the waffle. Between the gelato flavours we had opted for, we preferred the Honey Chrysanthemum over the Açai Yogurt; the Honey Chrysanthemum was one that had pretty profound floral notes that hit the tastebuds almost immediately as one tastes the gelato — albeit tea-like yet well-rounded off with a hint of sweetness that runs at the back of the tongue from the infusion of honey. In retrospect, the Açai Yogurt gelato seemed to lack that intricate layering of flavours and felt a little flat — the Açai Yogurt being more heavy on the yogurt aspect and lacks that deep, berry-like flavours which açai typically carries. Both scoops of gelato do have a good, creamy consistency which did not melt too quickly — stored appropriately without any icy bits within as well.

Having tried only two flavours out of the many gelato flavours which are available at Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato, we did find their flavours a little hit-and-miss; there are flavours that are done well such as that of the Honey Chrysanthemum, though there are also flavours such as that of the Açai Yogurt that would probably work better if they can somehow tweak the recipe just by a little. That being said, concluding the entire experience at Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato just by trying out two of their ice-cream flavours against the many that they have might be a little unfair considering the number of gelato flavours that they have in stock. Whilst we also did not give their other savoury items such as the items from the Toasties section of the menu a try, we found their buttermilk waffles to be one that is of a respectable quality that works well with the various toppings and also with the gelato that they have to offer as well. Prices of the gelato at Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato starts at $5 for a single scoop for a classic flavour, while the single scoop for a premium flavour is priced at $5.50; the Scoopy One (i.e. 1 Buttermilk Waffle with 1 Classic Scoopy) is priced at $9, while the Scoopy Two which we have had would start from $12 — the prices do seem rather reasonable from a gelato parlour in a neighbourhood setting these days. Scoopy Doo Handmade Gelato does seem like a fuss-free gelato parlour that feels like a place that wants to genuinely serve their patrons well; we do feel that there are some details that they may want to look into such as the decor and some of their food offerings in order to create their own identity amidst the rather saturated F&B scene these days. Nonetheless, a spot that probably works well for the residents staying around this neighbourhood.
