Similar to the durian bun, the matcha bun is soft and fluffy, but has a floury aftertaste that I didn’t appreciate. The matcha filling is also molten liquid, and it’s unsweetened, making each bite quite bitter. Between the floury taste and the bitter matcha, I didn’t like the matcha lava bun at all and am also unlikely to try any of their other flavours.
Chanced upon this Thai stall at the Takashimaya food fest, and picked up one of these tiny lava buns. Apart from their cute logo and even cuter durian stamp, their buns aren’t that great. They were fluffy and soft, but had a floury aftertaste. The lava filling is truly molten lava-like though, and it oozes out rapidly when bitten into so be careful or you’re likely to get scalded. The durian flavour is pretty strong, so it will likely satisfy durian lovers. I wish the filling was more creamy rather than watery, so while I didn’t think this was a bad bun overall, I wouldn’t order it again.
Only left with the Uji Matcha flavour and it was on weekend promotion at $1.50 for 1. I regret tearing it while walking because the filling burst and flows out immediately. Matcha filling was thick and flow-y, flavour was subtle but still strong and authentic as compared to some of those in the market.
Bun skin is soft with mochi-like texture, slightly chewy. Rest assured that the green colour skin is 100% natural green dye from flowers and plants.
From the famous bangkok chain phoenix lava and they have several branches all over SEA. I tried the Uji Matcha but there are also flavors such as chocolate, the original salted egg and even durian. The pale green exterior was a lot thicker and chewier than I expected but it was pretty good and not bland thankfully. Beware of the runny exterior and it’ll explode and spill all over if you’re not careful and it’s burning hot which I learnt the hard way. The liquid interior was not overly sweet and even had bitter matcha notes which made it feel like they used real matcha powder to make it and not just a flavoring. Little on the expensive side but definitely worth a try.

The craze for these lava baos is madness!! Long queues forming at Raffles Place exchange. We were wondering what all the hype was and finally we knew why! These Steam baos originated from Bangkok... They have a variety of fillings such as Matcha, durian, black sesame, salted egg yolk. Priced at a steep $3.50 per, $16 for a box of 5 assorted flavors. We tried the uji matcha. The filling was flowy but was too little compared to the thick bao! Proportion of filling to Bao is abit off and we wished the filling was a little more Gao. They have another outlet/pop up at Takashimaya basement (near Godiva Choc) which was less crowded
