Found this bakery while I was walking around the hawker centre looking for lunch, so decided to grab some of them before leaving.

There’s Apple Crumble, Matcha White Choc, Oreo Muffin and Chocolate Banana. All have the soft and firm texture which I enjoy pretty much.

Was walking around Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre after our meal there and spotted Muffin Homme within the hawker centre itself — yet another one of those stalls operated by first-time hawkers, Muffin Homme is one of those stalls that serves up muffins and other bakes; a sight that is increasingly common in hawker centre these days such as the likes of Butter & Cream Bakery which has outlets at both Lau Pa Sat as well as Kopitiam Square. Like most of such other bakery stalls that are found in hawker centres, Muffin Homme serves up a decent variety of muffins and egg tarts — they also do seem to have a chiffon cake being listed on their menu as well; all items available for the day are displayed prominently on the display shelf which is located right beside the cashier at the counter. As with all other stalls at Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre, all items listed on the menu at Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre comes with the dish’s calorie count being prominently displayed on the menu board — this is also no exception for Muffin Homme as well.

Having quite a full meal from another stall at Bukit Canberra Hawker Centre, we found ourselves going for the Chocolate Egg Tart; Muffin Homme also serves up an an Original Egg Tart — the usual variant with no other fillings apart from the egg cure within that we are all familiar with. Visually, the Chocolate Egg Tart comes with chocolate chip being placed atop the egg tart — the egg tart from Muffin Homme also comes with a shortbread crust at the bottom; the egg tart also coming in a shape that suggests that it is slightly deeper / taller than the usual egg tarts that we are used to seeing served at most neighbourhood bakeries as well as dim sum establishments, though this style of egg tarts have become increasingly common from such modern bakeries located within hawker centres these days. Taking a bit into the Chocolate Egg Tart, one would notice a layer of chocolate ganache that sits underneath the egg curd just above the shortbread tart base; it being gooey and oozy having been melted from the baking process. Much of the sweetness of the Chocolate Egg Tart comes from this layer; we also liked how the chocolate used here didn’t cause the throat to itchy and wasn’t particularly “heaty”. That being said, we did notice how the chocolate ganache did overwhelm the warm and jiggly egg curd above it a little; the notes of chocolate being almost the primary flavour rather than the egg curd itself — the egg curd did carry a light custardy hint of flavours without being particularly sweet and probably would do quite well on its own in the Original Egg Tart. The shortbread crust was well-made; it was sufficiently firm to hold up everything that sat above it — we were also impressed with how it could hold up against our bites on the egg tart without crumbling into a mess, all that whilst not being too hard to chew on. Flavour-wise, the shortbread crust does taste pretty close to that of shortbread cookies without being all too buttery – pretty well-made in our opinion.

Whilst we used to be not too receptive of such bakery stalls being located in hawker centres, our perception of such establishments have changed ever since we had given Syiok at Beauty World Centre and Butter & Cream Bakery at Lau Pa Sat a go; both establishments being very inventive with their creations, yet achieving some form of quality that makes them somewhat “artisan” as compared to the average neighbourhood bakery. We can perhaps say the same for Muffin Homme; whilst we have yet to give their range of muffins a try, we were really impressed with the quality of their Chocolate Egg Tart – not too sweet, whilst using quality ingredients and also being pretty well-executed in general. No doubt that the flavours of its egg tarts and muffins are a little more conventional as compared with the likes of Syiok and Butter & Cream Bakery, but these folks do seem to know what they are doing here — a hawker stall that definitely deserves a mention for the hard work that they put into their craft!
