Ootoro, uni and ikura.. these are a few of my favourite things.

I'm REALLY not a fan of restaurants in shopping malls but I think this place is worth my two minutes of burppling. Quality cuts of fish for very reasonable prices (at lunch). The 7 piece nigiri set includes chutoro and otoro, and makes a very satisfying lunch indeed. If I had to nit pick I'd say the rice falls apart, which I know is a mortal sin for nigiri sushi, but hey this is SG not Tokyo.

For this set, it comes with sashimi too! The first ever collaboration of the renowned Japanese Unagi wholesaler Yamada Suisan with Singapore restaurant, Muguro Donya at [email protected] Suntec City level 3. These unagi are carefully monitored with precise feeding to ensure they are not overfed, so no fatty unagi here! ☝🏼

I visited Maguro Donya at suntec city based on a friends recent raving about their otoro don. At 39++ a set, it came with 6 glorious slices of fatty tuna rested on a bed of vinegared sushi rice. The set also came with a small bowl of chawamushi and a miso soup that was good, albeit slightly salty. But heck, the star of the show was the otoro. Deliciously fatty and melt in the mouth, the texture was almost akin to eating beef. Mildly sweet but so rich. The worst part of my meal was realizing i was on my last piece.

While definitely not the kind of meal, one would eat daily. It's definitely worth every dollar and such a good pick me up during the mid month slumber.

The Yamamori Hakkiki Gunkan (SGD$12.00) which is also "warship" / "battleship" in Japanese, is a mound of minced tuna piled high onto Japanese rice rolled with sushi - smooth, fatty and intensely appetizing.

Maguro (tuna) is never my first choice of fish at Japanese restaurants in Singapore because many of them serve akami (red meat) which has a strong bloody smell and taste. But I'm glad I found Maguro-donya where I can enjoy fresh maguro with premium cuts that are prepared in the best simplistic way to bring out the fresh and naturally sweet flavours of maguro.

This aburi donburi is half covered with thickly sliced Bluefin maguro otoro (fattiest part of the tuna) and the other half with freshly scraped maguro meat. Watch them flame-sear the donburi right in front of you and enjoy that beautiful and savory smell of fresh maguro! 😍 Wait and behold, the aburi maguro just fell apart in my mouth with such strong umami. The maguro oil that seeped through after torched made the rice tasted heavenly. 😋

(P.S.: The set comes with miso soup, chawanmushi (oishii desu!), salad and fruits. Talk about a well-balanced and tasty meal 😄.)

Served in a light broth, the grilled nasu (eggplant) carried a light smokiness that gave this dish extra dimension. A nice side to add if you want something hot to balance out the chill of sashimi and sushi.

Highly recommended to come during lunch hour on weekends! No crowds at all, and you get to try their exceptionally fresh and delicious maguro sashimi and valuable set lunches!

Bought my bf here for his birthday treat, and he was so happy! He ordered the Bluefin Tuna Scraped Torched Rice Bowl set, while I got the Bara Chirashi Don set. Both was excellent. My cubes of sashimi were crisp with sweetness and freshness. Bf's tuna was torched to perfection. Had the right balance of charred-ness, yet still semi raw on the inside. Soooo good. I'm salivating again while thinking about it!

We also shared a Megumi Gunkan, topped with Uni. Tastiest symphony I've ever eaten. The mix of flavours from the fresh minced maguro, uni and roe was brilliant! And the serving size of the the minced maguro was so generous, that we had trouble eating it as a whole! Not a trouble that we mind having though :D
