The chicken breast was surprisingly not astringent, while retaining the flavour of spices and herbs! I enjoyed the sweet acidity which perfectly complements the spicy heat too. 👍 The slippery linguine was still coated with adequate sauce while the broccoli which has absorbed all the "essence" retained some crunch. 🤌
🍝
This has been my fail proof go-to order this since almost a decade ago. Nothing mind-blowing, but it sure wouldn’t poke a hole in your wallet nor make you go dissatisfied.

🌶
The best thing which can be said would be their extra huge servings (even possible to be shared between two small eaters), yet it is comparably priced. With a solid spice compared to usual foodcourt fares, it didn’t fail to include ample sweet and savoury onions which retained a pleasant crunch without its raw astringency. What was unconventional was how the purposeful inclusion of chicken skin in the meat, providing an additional depth. I think
🌶
The egg wasn’t molten this time but it's still understandable since it's dabao-ed. I do wish the meat was more evenly marinated as some parts felt overly salted and peppery.
🌶
Definitely not lacklustre despite missing the A hidden and super underrated treasure in the west which undoubtedly deserves more attention!!! 🤌

Eat simi: Mala (Zhong La/Med spicy)
Eat how much: $14
Eat which store: Good Taste Mala Hotpot
Eat where: Fajar Shopping Centre, Koufu
Eat nice not: 4.4/5
🌶
One bite in and i was immediately SOLD!! Each ingredient was decadently coated with glistening mala sauce 🥲 Every mouthful packed so much more than a punch of heat and flavour 🔥 I am really proud at how this dish has also achieved the holy trinity of characteristics only found in a well-cooked mala - numbness, spiciness and fragrance!! It embodies more of the heat and numbness than fragrance which is perfect for Singaporeans who absolutely love spicy food 🤤 Not to mention, this mala was also reasonably priced for 4 noodles and so many ingredients?!!
🌶
This mala may be great but it lacks a distinct persona which differentiates it from other well-cooked mala. Also, it may taste slightly salty for people who prefer their mala to be more mild tasting. However, in the defense of the mala, it's the MSG which makes it so insanely addictive isn't it? 😬 Nonetheless, EAT IN MODERATION OK!!
🌶
This mala has taken over ma heart ❤️‍🔥

First bite in and you’ll definitely be able to tell that the slow braised beef was well-marinated with its deep soy umami flavours diffusing in each mouth! 🥺 I particularly liked how the beef weren’t sinew and was relatively tender with a slight chew. Rice was cooked to perfection - fluffy and well doused with sauce. 🙌
🍚
However, the yolk seemed to make the rice tad watery. 😱 I would also prefer consistency in its meat as some beef cubes were spicy while other parts weren’t. 🧐 Was also expecting a more complex flavour too as it turned out quite monotonous.
🍚
Nevertheless, it’s a decent meal with adequate serving and taste for $10++! It works perfectly as a quick-fix lunch when you’re craving for something slightly atas too. 🥳 Get the salmon bowl instead! 👌

Their truffle infused rice never fails to amaze me especially with it’s sweet-smelling fragrant, rather than pungency. The addition of tobiko roe provided a symphony of textures — with surprising pops in between takes. 🥷 The salmon was neither the silkiest nor smoothest one I’ve had but for this price, still acceptable lah! 😶‍🌫️
🐟
I’m not quite sure what the hallmark of good tuna is but mine tasted slightly fishy and stale. As you can see from the pic it was kindaaa breaking apart alrdy. :/
🐟
Think the cooked bowls tastes better! Really liked their aburi salmon too so perhaps get that instead. 👀

Eat simi: Ashes Smash Cheese Burger Set (Single)

Eat which store: Ashes Burnnit
Eat where: Golden Mile FC, Bugis Beach Rd

🍔
First impression: quite impressed. For only $5.90, Ashes has offered me a burger set transcending the standards of similarly-priced traditional fast food burgers! 😳 Evident in the generous servings of freshly fried and seasoned fries, they definitely do not scrimp on their portions. 🥺 The bread worked magic by absorbing the essence of the patty juices, while still maintaining an adequately firm bite. The molten cheese undoubtedly brought out the best of the flavours in the burger too!
🍔
Despite its merits, the beef patty which was the supposed main highlight wasn’t the most stellar though. It was tad overcooked, resulting in parched and tough meat lacking in its own flavours. Having a fluffier bread would also aid in the texture too!!
🍔
Surprisingly, Ashes seems to do well with the sides and supporting elements. For only $5.90, it would’ve been a solid burger go-to hotspot if the entire dish was executed better. 🙌

Fun fact: i have a whole album dedicated to all the mala i have eaten
🌶
As a mala connoisseur/regular/epicurean/gourmet, this failed to hit me in the mala feels. It was oddly sweet and as 中辣, it was barely spicy and lacked the mala flavour (香). The only flavour i got while eating (not savouring) this was this odd taste of sweet-savoury spiciness. It felt like it was just ingredients unevenly drenched with watery mala-flavoured sauce. 😕
🌶
Although i prefer my mala dry and spicy (some people may mala with more gravy), the fact that it failed to achieve the the basic elements of mala (spice, flavour, colour and mala satisfaction) just makes me really disappointed. :( Unlike the usual fluffly moist rice we are used to, it was rather dry. 🥲 I had high hopes for this famous pioneer of mala but alas, it failed to meet my expectations. 🥶
🌶
I don't see myself getting this again, also because i don't get to choose my serving of each ingredient. Nonetheless, if you are a person who somehow enjoys mala with a sweeter note and doesn't taste as spicy, this could be a good choice. 👍

Eat simi: Duck Ramen (3 pcs)
Each how much: $11.65 (inclu. GST + Service Charge)
Eat which store: Tokyo Shokudo
Eat where: Lot 1, Choa Chu Kang
Eat nice not: 4.5/5
🍜
Hol’ up. Tokyo shokudo needs to spill their deeds now. The broth was extra GAO and creamy which made it feel like it has been simmering for an entire century. 🤯 (LIKE WHAT) It’s also super addictive, with a silky texture which glides down your throat without the flavour being too surfeiting. 🤯🤯 The shallots may look unassuming, but it’s in fact a whole flavour bomb which lifted the entire dish. 🤯🤯🤯 Served al dente while being coated with aromatic fats, the noodles proved themselves to be equally addictive. 🤯🤯🤯🤯 For the last part, I absolutely love how the bowl is ceramic and not plastic, which allows the ramen to retain its heat better, guaranteeing to not only warm your gut, but also your heart. ❤️
🍜
The one thing which I couldn’t get myself to enjoy was the duck. 🤨 It has a weird herbaceous taste and was slightly bitter too. 🧐 I didn’t like its cardboard-like texture either though it was quite easy to bite through. Best to opt for other meat options instead!
🍜
Undoubtedly a well thought out bowl of noodles which demands another visit. Not the duck though. 🙃🙃

Eat simi: Salmon Kaisen (Lunch Bowl)
Each how much: $11.70 (Incl GST+ Service charge)
Eat which store: Tanuki Raw
Eat where: Orchard Central
Eat nice not: 4.2/5
🐟
For only $10, it comes with myraid variety of thicc and generous serving salmon slices. The fresh salmon pieces served was fresh and silky smooth, and surprisingly, with a hint of charred fragrance due to the aburi salmon beside it. 🔥 The mentaiko was creamy, though slightly lacklustre as I hoped that it could be more seared and stronger tasting. Rice was served with an extra OOMPH due to the addition of seasoning but it also comes with an acquired taste which some may not be used to. The entire dish was elevated with a dollop of of ikura — providing the flavours reminiscent of the sea with its savouriness and umami. Last but definitely not a fact to missed, did you know that Tanuki Raw uses freshly grated wasabi? Although it wasn’t as pungent, it’s still a lethal tear jerker which left me crying for tissue after every bite of the addictive spice. 💧
🐟
For a price like none other, and a satisfying lunch bowl packed with only the generosity of Tanuki Raw, I guess I’m proud to announce that I’ve found my next favourite lunch spot. 😳
🐟
Fun fact: I tried the decorative leaf too. 😬

I’ve never felt more bad writing a review but here we go…😢
🍜
The soup was pretty average, with a touch of earthiness from the spice to provide its flavours. 🙃 However, it was pretty one-dimensional and same goes for the noodles as well which failed to absorb any of the flavour, hence tasting rather flat. Beef was unsurprisingly sinew and tasteless, although the meatball did save the dish a bit. I quite liked the complimentary crispy fried pork roll though. Pretty fragrant and savoury! Especially the addition of mushrooms with added a nice fibrous texture. 👍 Alas, it was insanely oil-drippingly greasy — a result of the lack of frying etiquette. 😮‍💨
🍜
It was my second time visiting after a few years but still can’t seem to get myself to enjoy this pho. It’s quite sadly a warm bowl of noodles which does not seek my return. 💔 But who knows? Maybe I was twice unlucky and you could enjoy your visit there! Third time’s the charm!

Each how much: $10.70 (Incl GST & service charge)
Eat which store: Tongue Tip Lanzhou Beef Noodles
Eat where: Hillion Mall
Eat nice not: 3.9/5
🍜
My classic fail-proof choice of small flat noodles never fails to live up to my expectation of ensuring maximization of flavours! (Science says: Larger surface area to volume ratio👩‍🔬) Even better, the noodles were perfectly al dente — retaining a slight Q without the coated flavours being too heavy on the palate. The beef was savoury and rich, excluding any gaminess. 🤩 Not forgetting, it’s texture was tender and easy to break apart!! Other wins include the soup generously packed with spices, and the pleasant kick of the noodles from the serving of chilli. 🥳
🍜
However, I do think that the chilli is missing some definitive fragrance to bring out the best of this noodle dish. 🌶 The noodles may also be tad oily too. 😶‍🌫️
🍜
This is good-enough bowl of noodles which makes me crave for a rainy day for the excuse of another visit. 🤫 Perhaps it’s time for another visit especially during this rainy season. ☔️

🍜
Most westies should have heard abt them! Opens at 3am and closes at 2pm in the afternoon, this stall sells a variety of noodles and porride. Of course, they are famous for their ke kou mian, so dont get confused by their name! 👊🏼
For the bowls we tried, they contain minced meat, pork slices, veggies, pork liver and topped with fried scallions (like your typical ban mian ingredients but pork liver is a plus for me 😁) You can also top up $0.50 for an egg.
Unfortunately, the soup was slightly salty for me 😔, but for the noodle and meat i find it decent though, can taste the marinated minced meat. Wouldn’t say it is mind blowing good because it is just instant noodles, something like home cook noodles but a slightly salty version 😬
What i wish there are ikan billis in it to add on that crunchiness and soup base can be less salty, other than that i think it is a decent bowl of noodles you can get at this price point. I wouldn’t eat this often, i would eat it when i feel like it… (dont come @ me pls)
🍜
However, if you are at its vicinity and craving for some decent supper, or wanting to jio your frens for some supper time 🥱, go ahead and try! There are other variations of ke kou mian that yall could try too! Do try to avoid peak hours as the wait can be as long as 30mins!!
