Oh mai gawd. Can we talk about the custard encased within the thin fluffy dough. It was so silky smooth with the classic bitterness of matcha without being overwhelmingly sweet! Perfect for siu dai people like me, but i still think the sweetness can get to you at times. Loved the extra aromatic taste with the touch of astringency of matcha.
🍞
The ratio is a bit senget at times but since both the bread and the filling are muacks 😚💋,
🍞
In cheem terms, it's a sensual experience which immerses you into to different flavour and textural profiles of the matcha custard!!

Eat simi: Strawberry Pie
Each how much: $1.60
Eat which store: McDonald’s
Eat nice not: 3.8/5
🍓
McDonald’s seems to always do their pies right don’t they? Surprisingly, this pie wasn’t as artificial-tasting as hi-chew strawberry chewies!! There were also little fibres scattered around the gooey fillings and I pretty enjoyed the sweet acidity of the pie although it somehow tasted sweeter than their apple pies.
🍓
This isn’t my favourite pie from McDonald’s but it definitely does justice to strawberry fanatics!

Eat simi: Vanilla Cremé + White Chocolate Nori
Each how much: $5 (Med Cup)
Eat which store: Tom’s Palette
Eat where: 51 Middle Rd, Bugis

🍨
Ah yes, the nori. An iconic signature found in no other places. The white choc nori ice cream is a creative rendition to sweet-savoury ice creams. The fragrant nuts were coated with caramel-sweet white chocolate and had a very addictive bite to it. The umami and savouriness of the seaweed somehow pairs really well with the sweetness and keeps you going back for more despite being tad diabetes-inducing. 🥴😬

And the vanilla! Extremely luscious, smooth, fragrant and most importantly, not crazily sweet! One of the richer-tasting vanilla ice creams out there without breaking the bank. Definitely legit w the specks of vanilla bean seeds too. 😩
🍨
Tom’s palette is undoubtedly a synonymous place for everyone, and there’s a good reason for that. 👀
🍨
Hack it: Daily menu out on their instagram everyday ~11am! They do a rotation of flavours quite often too so you know what to do already horh? 😏

Eat simi: Cranberry Chocolate Scone
Each how much: $2.30 (-10cents w/o plastic bag)
Eat which store: Gokoku Japanese Bakery
Eat where: Millenia Walk
Eat nice not: 2.1/5
🍫
I was rather surprised by the initial strong savoury notes which hit me as i expected it to be sweet! 😮 This was accompanied by the bitterness of the chocolate and a buttery fragrance thereafter. I couldn’t quite decipher the usual tang and taste of the cranberry though, as it was overpowered by the myriad of strong flavours. Also, there was an awkward doughy aftertaste. :/ Conversely, i liked the bits of dark chocolate chips scattered throughout the scone which supplied some bittersweet happiness! ❤️ I particularly enjoyed the bottom of the scone due to it’s almost biscuit-like texture which nicely contrasts with the soft dense scone.
🍫
The texture lacked the supposed crumbliness and was similar to dense fudge brownies instead. 🧐
🍫
Any yums and on point scones to recommend??

Eat simi: Brown Sugar Peanut Pancake

I love how it was piping hot when i first got it 🔥 The flakey exterior crust was contrasted by the doughy bread-like interior holding the fillings together. I enjoyed how this pancake was not too greasy! 👍 It also comes with thick chonky pieces of peanuts, very ideal for people who enjoys chunky nuts!! It also has an adequate amount of sweetness, similar to those in less sweet red bean buns.
🫓
I was rather let down by the lack of fragrance despite the addition of sesame seeds. The crust was also rather thick with a 3:1 crust to filling ratio, thus resulting in it tasting quite surfeit even after a few bites. Definitely best eaten when shared between two people. 👭 Would be cool if the sugar was molten in the bun too. :/
🫓
If you are a carby-person and miss sweet snacks from china, this would be an acceptable compensation for the lack of travel due to covid. 😗 I'd also recommend the other savoury buns and pancakes which i enjoy! 🤭

Eat simi: Coffee Bun
Each how much: $2
Eat which store: Roti Mum

☕️
Coffee buns never fail in their aromatic and slight crisp crust - hot or cold. It was also satisfyingly sweet with some savoury melted butter encased in the floofy, soft bread.
☕️
Coffee buns from roti mum used to be one of my favourite buns but this really pushed down my expections. ☹️ I recall my buns with more molten butter, and stronger tasting. TDLR: It lacked the critical elements of a coffee bun. There were other reviews speaking of it wasn’t quite up to standard too. 😩
☕️
OG mummy best. Free one.

I swear this tastes like salted caramel ice cream. 😶 It has the archetypal sweet-savoury-umami profile which taste…like caramel (HAHA), but coloured in deep blue. 🥴 There was also the incorporation of the addictive biscuit-like sweet crunch which keeps you going in for more. Flavour definitely leans towards the sweeter side too!
🌌
Well, it kind of lost it’s caramel flavour after a while when the sweetness gets a little too overwhelming. Also a good option to share this between two!
🌌
Will I buy it again? Nah. So, buy it once for the novelty because it’s not often Mcdonalds comes up with something interesting. 🤐

Eat simi: Double-baked Taro Mochi Croissant

Gosh, this is one dense and CHONKS piece of croissant. This could be one of the flakiest and loudest croissant I’ve had so far!! There was lingering sweetness in every bite, accompanied by the quintessential buttery fragrance of a well-made pastry. The co-habitation of grainy taro and soft mochi produced a really intriguing yet unforgettable texture. 🥺 The top (supposed) sweet potato crust provided a touch of sweet earthy fragrance too! Also, bb is really super generous with their servings which makes the premium price slightly more worth it. (I was really full after eating this 🥴)
🍠
I kinda expected more Q of the mochi but it was pretty much non-existent. (Maybe because i toasted it?) 😕 It’s definitely on the sweeter side which overpowered some of the butter fragrance.
🍠
A pretty well-executed and creative croissant which wins in their laminated crust and servings. 🤩 Definitely on the pricier side though.

First and most importantly, this is an ABSOLUTE value for the dollar. 🤑 Not only are you served a bowl of extra thicc and gao gula melaka with the sweet distinct smokey aroma. Precisely because it is that gao, less sugar could be a perfect option for you!! Also, I particularly enjoyed the mild sweetness of the adzuki beans and how the don’t turn hard after soaking inside the ice-cold dessert for sometime. 👍 The handmade green chendol worms with held no boundaries for their pandan aroma — sweet!😚👌
❄️
I wouldn’t mind their coconut can be stronger and thicker though, for the extra creaminess. But for that price, demanding more seems a bit unreasonable horh 😗
❄️
You need no ABSOLUT when you have this absolute bowl of chendol!! 😬 My go-to dessert for a 100C weather in Singapore; why you haven’t go try!!

Eat simi: Almond Croissant
Each how much: $4.50
Eat which store: Bread Yard

Eat nice not: 4.3/5
🥐
I was welcomed immediately with the passionate crackles of the perfect morning when I first bit into it! ❤️ Of all the almond croissants I’ve had so far, I felt that this was one of the more buttery ones! Pretty enjoyed the fragrant sweetness concealed in every bite, especially because of the almond frangipane on top and within the croissant. 😚 Toasting it definitely provided bread yard’s already extra-nutty almond flakes another level of aromatic umami with extra nuttiness. 🤯
🥐
The almond croissant from bread yard is evidently dense as seen from the more levelled cross-section. Definitely depends on your preference too — on whether you prefer croissants with well separated honeycombs or flatter ones.
🥐
If you’re one who prefers more almond > croissant, bread yard is THE ONE for you!! They are kinda humongous too so it will fill you up till you BABA! 🤩
🥐
And definitely my bad, I over-toasted the sides so yes, it’s chaoda-ed. 😔 Many apologies to the bakers of breadrack!!

Eat simi: Coffee Caramel Tart
Each how much: $8.50 (Shopee 2 for $10)
Eat which store: TCC
Eat where: Ion Orchard
Eat nice not: 3.5/5
☕️
TCC nailed the texture with it’s luscious and soft interior, encased by a “DOing DOing” pudding-like skin. ☺️ The savouriness of the caramel does an excellent job in highlighting the bitterness and aroma of the coffee due to the contrasting flavours. I also enjoyed the pairing of coffee and chocolate ganache within the tart! 🍫
☕️
The tart could be more buttery and less dry though, because it did not manage to hold the entire tart very well. Everything started to crumble quite badly. 😭 The bitter decorative chocolate could be less sweet too to bring out even more aroma of other elements.
☕️
It’s be great to educate staffs on basic maintenance of the food such as how long it can be kept too!!
☕️
A tart which provides an enhanced textural experience!! Smooth, aromatic and luscious without the any excess surfeit! 🙌

Eat simi: Mango Puffs
Eat how much: $15.50 for 25 puffs
Eat which store: J&C Bakery
Eat where: Blk 15 Woodlands Loop #03-03, Singapore, 738322
Eat nice not: 4.5/5
🥭
The highest praise this mango puff will receive is that it's not-too-sweet! 😉 Precisely because of that it's extremely lethal as you can devour many at a time. 😱 The puffs also have a golden 1:1 ratio of pastry and cream which doesn't feel too jelak after several puffs. 😚 the mango filling is extremely fluffy and smooth, with a hint of mango fragrance which does not taste too strong or artificial. 👍 You can even notice the thin mango fibres as they use legit mango puree to make their mango puffs with no artificial flavours!!
🥭
Although the puffs may not be puff-connoisseur standard of having a crispy shell, its relatively affordable price makes it all justifiable! Also i think the soft texture is extremely nostalgic as it reminds me those buffet eclairs when buffets were still a thing pre-covid. I think having adding more distinct mango fibres would elevate the texture and the entire puffs entirely. 🙃
🥭
If you are looking for an affordable, addictive and nostalgic puff (i ate this since i was a kid!!!!), this mango puff is a must try!! 🤩
