Tendon Delight
Came here for dinner.
I got the Sakae Tempura Noodle ($15.30). I had their cold Soba which was not bad. The tempura was quite good though. Hot and slightly crispy. The tempura had a good variety of eggplant, Enoki, Crabstick and some other ingredients which I forgot.
My parents had the Sakae Tendon ($10.90) which came with the same variety of tempura. Honestly the don seemed more worth as it's cheaper and comes with miso soup. I was really sad about the fact that the cold Soba did not come with miso soup.
We also tried the Salmon Karaage ($2.60) which tasted very average and the California Temaki ($2.60) which was good.
Overall would recommend the Sakae Tendon and California Temaki.
Came during off peak hours with my friend for lunch.
Ordered their lunch set which comes with free Miso soup, salad and a drink.
The Miso soup was good. Flavourful and not too salty with lots of kelp and some tofu. Salad was good too. Lettuce, corn and red onions topped with sesame dressing. A classic dressing that never fails. For my drink I ordered their milk tea which was great. The sweetness was just nice and the tea was smooth.
Now on to the Extreme Tendon Set which consists of battered prawns, chicken, white fish, egg, pumpkin and long beans on a bed of rice, drizzled with their tendon sauce. I like how the batter was crispy and not too thick. They also gave more of their sweet and thick tendon sauce to dip the tempura in them. Among all the tempura, I felt the white fish tasted the best as it was moist and well seasoned. Chicken breast on the other hand was a little tough. Long beans were quite good, though a little stringy. Egg was a little of a disappointment as there was no flow-y yolk.
Really enjoyed my meal. However my friend ordered their sushi and was disappointed with their overcooked and slightly mushy rice. Also we did wait quite some time before we could settle our bill due to manpower shortage.
Overall choose wisely what you eat at there as their standard varies.
All their tendon comes with Miso soup and chawamushi.
Ordered their Signature Tendon with Spicy Sauce. Their tendon were well fried but quite oily. Like every bite has some oil in it. Their long beans were quite string-y so you have to eat it in one mouth. Prawns, eggplant, mushroom, baby corn, fish, eggplant was not bad. Squid also have to be eaten in one bite if not the squid gets seperated from the batter. Seaweed was a bit of a letdown as it was quite plain so it felt like I was eating a plain crispy oily cracker. Their spicy sauce was good though, slightly spicy but flavourful. The rice served was quite little but I like their portion as I don't like to take in too much carbs. One thing I wished they did was provide another bowl to place your tempura (like how some other tendon shop) as I couldn't eat my rice till I had eaten 2 pieces of tempura.
Miso soup was good. Flavourful and had the Miso taste.
Chawamushi was also good. The only complain is that I wish they gave more. The chawamushi was only filled to half of the cup. *Sobs*
Also ordered their cold Houji tea ($1.90). It was ok but not sure if it was refillable. As the staff seem quite busy, I didn't ask.
Overall if you're craving for tendon and you're nearby I'm sure it'll satisfy your cravings but you will definitely leave the place smelling like fried food.
Came here to this newly opened Japanese shop which focuses on ramen and tendon.
Ordered their Signature Tendon ($13.90). Prawn, fish, nori (seaweed), egg, assorted vegetable and rice. The batter was okay. Not as light as I like and could be crispier. Somehow their batter was a little on the dense side and slightly thick and not quite crispy for all. Some of the battered items were crispier than others. For the assorted vegetable what they gave was a slice of pumpkin and a shiitake mushroom. Fish was quite big and there were 2 prawns for this don. Quantity wise I think it was good. My favourite was their egg and nori. Rice was good. There's was sauce on the rice as well. There's also this option to choose signature sauce or spicy sauce. I chose the spicy sauce but somehow I felt like the sauce wasn't spicy and the only difference was that they sprinkled chili powder on top of the tempura.
Their dons also comes with Miso soup. The Miso soup was warm but lacked an umami-ish taste. There's also spring onions and kelp in the soup.
Also ordered their Gyoza ($5.90). The Gyoza was average I guess. 5 pieces of well pan-fried dumplings.
Ordering is thru an iPad that they place on the table. There's also 2 physical menu placed on the table for those who prefer old school hardcopy of the menu. Overall for the price I would say it was not bad.
There's a 1-for-1 promo menu. $22.80++ for any two sets on that menu.
I had the tendon + chicken tempura set while my friend had the tendon + agedashi tofu set.
All set comes with salad and miso soup. Salad was cold, yummy and tossed with a refreshing citrus dressing. Miso soup was slightly on the salty side and is a shade darker than your usual miso soup but nonetheless yummy.
Tendon was good. Rice topped with deep fried battered cucumber, carrot, long bean, lotus root and prawn. Batter was crisp and not too oily. My set came with chicken which was fried beautifully. Crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Agedashi tofu was slightly oily. Skin was chewy and tofu was silky.
We also ordered green tea which is refillable. Overall it was a good meal.
Had the Aburi Salmon Mentaiko Don ($11.90)- cubed salmon, tamago and cucumber topped with mentaiko, lightly torched and ebiko. I love Mentaiko so I naturally ordered this dish however when it came I felt that the portion of salmon seemed a little small and the mentaiko was too rich making the whole dish quite 'jelat'.
My friend had the Mixed Tendon ($15.80). Presentation of it was superb and it tasted better than my don. Batter was crisp and not oily. The spiciness of the sauce was quite mild and it tasted similar to 'tam tam crab flavoured snack' which I really like. My friend felt that the don was on the dry side and needed more sauce.
We got the option to make the don into a set where they serve chawamushi and miso soup. Chawamushi was fine but the soup was just bland.
Overall I would recommend getting the tendon.
