Japanese Eateries
Came by Shukuu Izakaya on a weekday night. Pretty surprised how packed it was, so there was a certain degree of noise.
Ordered a variety of dishes, of which a couple left an impression. The crab roe mentaiko was pretty interesting and delicious! Mentaiko provided the umami to the crab meat.
The place has nice Izakaya vibes so if you’re looking for that this is the place to be!
We discovered a whole row of eateries at Vision Exchange which is a stone’s throw away from Jurong East mrt, so that’s really convenient.
Had the foie gras gyudon, and it was really affordable compared to what you pay for foie gras in other restaurants. Beef shabu shabu on the bowl was not bad too. Overall, it was a pretty simple affair!
Now I understand why this is so highly raves about. You get an assortment of tempura- vegetable, seafood, meat and fish at the price of $15. What more can you ask for? I particularly enjoyed the mushroom and the prawn. The flavours are locked in and one bite into it you can taste that sweetness and saltiness all rolled into one. The spicy sauce just completes the whole meal and now your tongue is dancing with joy. Need I say more? You should definitely give this a shot.
Amongst the cafes that carry matcha drinks and desserts in Singapore, I have to say Hvala is top notch. These desserts are beautifully crafted, with different level of flavours nested in each of them. The richness of the tea is something you won’t fail to miss. While the price of $8.80 is steep, it’s becoming a common price point for such little bites.
✨ Was blown away by the flavour and depth of the shrimp broth. The soup is slightly spicy and not too heavy, so it is easy to finish the whole bowl.
I got the shrimp dumpling noodles while my partner got the Ebiko prawn paste. Both are good options if you’re lazy to peel prawns!
We got the Green Ramen and the Black Ramen. Unlike some ramen, this broth was lighter. The combination of basil and cheese was interesting, but it did complicate the flavours of the tonkotsu broth. On the other hand, the black ramen had a strong taste of seafood and garlic. Adding a tablespoon of vinegar definitely did shake things up a bit.
Other than food, I was terribly put off by the music. It was jarring and didn’t go well with the ambience. Sadly the staff I spoke to said that the music could not be changed.
We had 1-for-1 the regular (larger) Salmon Don. The salmon was fresh, crunchy, and I enjoyed the larger sized cubes. However, was disappointed with how dry the rice was. Overall, worth it with burpple beyond.
Was so excited when this bowl of Salmon Poke arrived! $9.90 for a base (soba, mixed red rice, salad, pasta) + 1 main (ranging from salmon poke, mentaiko, grilled unagi, and teriyaki salmon)! Add on of toppings (eg tamago, onsen egg, edamame) is just $0.90!
Really enjoyed the ambience of Rokki Bowls. With the 1-for-1, eating here is really reasonable! My friend and I had 2 smaller bowls, because we wanted to save our stomachs for Matchaya (just 6 minutes walk away!), but the large would have been reasonably priced because of the 1-for-1! You can also get 1-for-1 drinks with their partners in the shop.
I personally don’t fancy truffle that much, so it got a bit overpowering in the Truffle Wagyu Don, but the egg mixed with the sauce was so good and sharing 1/2 the bowl meant I didn’t get sick of the truffle flavour.
The salmon don was fresh and the sauce with the rice was great!
Would recommend to come here in a smaller group and also have an early dinner (it got more crowded at around 7pm)!
