This Shanghai-based chain specialises in customisable hotpots-in-bowls. Great if you’re rushing for a flight and craving mala on-the-go — all you gotta do is pick from a list of ingredients and wait for your takeaway order to be ready. Ingredients were fresh, and loved the nicely balanced mala sauce — neither too spicy nor too numbing. Do order the super chewy sweet potato vermicelli, fresh sea bass and tender pork belly slices! If you wanna kick it up a notch, help yourself to the DIY chilli flakes or creamy sesame sauce available at the takeaway counter.
Also appreciated the contrast in flavours stemming from the smoky, charred top and the creamy, milky centre. Cheese notes were not strong in this one though, as this one tends towards the sweet side. Not that I’m complaining, but fans of a more pungent, cheesy kick, you’re better off going for the blue cheese-based one at Olivia’s instead.

My first time having youtiao (fried dough stick) cheong fun (rice noodle roll) and I never would have fathomed these two elements hanging out together, but boy did it surpass my expectations! The youtiao retained its crispy texture and fragrance despite being wrapped and texturally challenged by that unbelievably smooth, soft and delicate cheong fun. This is the ultimate Yin and Yang done right, and I’d happily come back here just for another plate of this blissful marriage when I’m around the area!

Think gooey, melty cheese coupled with tender beef short ribs that pull apart with the soft tear of a fork, wedged between two pieces of bread blanketed in ANOTHER layer of cheese on the outside and grilled to crunchy perfection. Present in this grease party was also some chopped kimchi, which provided a welcome tartness to balance this dish out nicely. Come here if you are craving ultimate comfort food after a long day, or... I mean, do you really need a reason at all?

The ice creams at @kindredfolksg are smooth, creamy and fragrant without being too cloyingly sweet. In fact, most of the flavours I’ve tried so far have turned out to be delightful - a rare treat for someone who’s quite picky when it comes to ice cream tasting.
As a sucker for anything matcha, I’d recommend fellow lovers to go for the Matcha Gao here, as this joint has mastered the art of the perfect matcha ice cream (imo) - deliciously creamy with a superb balance between sweetness and the bitter matcha notes that come through at the end of every bite. Pair that with their crunchy, adequately fluffy and slightly savoury charcoal waffles and you’ll be grinning in no time. Don’t forget to come here with #burpplebeyond for 1-for-1 ice cream and waffles as well!

Buttercream was light, which is a plus point. However, we definitely enjoyed its darker toned compatriot. The black sesame cake was delightful - not too sweet while having a good ratio of sponge to cream. This is a triple threat comprising of nutty, moist and smooth, and I loved how every bite felt similar to consuming the Chinese dessert 芝麻糊 (sesame paste). 3.4/5 (HEGH) 4.4/5 (Goma)

The chicken came in a generous portion, and each piece was so freaking tender and flavourfully doused in that herby, chilli-flakey marinate which lended it a smokey flavour to compliment the sticky white rice underneath. As if that weren’t umami enough, you still had that runny souse vide egg to top it all off (even though the chicken itself had won me over already). Ahh, I just had a rather full lunch but I could really use a bowl of this right now.

This dish here was full on in flavour — bouncy, al dente ramen thick enough to coat each strand of noodle with that punchy pork and dried sardine broth thoroughly. However, the sardine taste tends to be a little overwhelming, so if you’re not a fan of this fish, tread carefully! Otherwise, a satisfying dish if you’re starving and on an overall.

And I was right! Perfectly cooked wantons with just the right amount of pork to shrimp ratio atop a bed of QQ noodles — flavours are simple, but the execution of all the components are really spot on. Tip: Don’t forget to request for the fried chilli flakes in oil to mix in with your noodles, which they display at the shopfront. So glad that this hawker gem has shifted from sixth avenue to a literal 20-minute walk from my place (233 Bukit Batok East Ave 5)! 4.7/5 #burpplesg #burpple
Came with high expectations to finally try these babies, and boy WAS I SATISFIED.
The sage cream cheese and berry compote toast ($4) was absolutely luscious — a savoury cream cheese spread with strong hints of sage nestled underneath a semi-sweet glaze made from an assortment of berries. Not forgetting the thick, crisp sourdough toast that made a perfect base for this marriage of flavours. But my winner was the nut butter, honey and sea salt toast ($4). One bite into this gem and I was F-L-O-O-R-E-D. Thick, creamy and slightly salty nut butter with a fragrant nutty flavour, alongside an adorable circular drizzle of honey and a sprinkle of sea salt atop a similarly perfectly crisp (but slightly less thick) piece of sourdough — this, was a match. made. in. heaven and an explosion in my mouth. 4.7/5

Slathered in chilli oil and lard, the mee pok noodles were qq and bouncy – slightly thinner than other mee pok's out there – and did not harbour an alkaline aftertaste as with many other stalls. This paired well with the crispy, crackly fish skin (which comes only with premium bowls). It's also easy to discern the labour put into the fishballs, which were lovingly handmade with fish paste, scallions and chilli, and unique in their non-factory-like shapes. Overall a satisfactory meal, but I wouldn't come back again if I weren't in the area. Tip: Do ask for extra x2 vinegar if you are not a fan of overly rich dishes, as the acidity helps to cut through the oiliness of this dish (which will definitely leave you with glossy lips)! Price: $6 (premium), $4.50 (basic)
