The dish just inherently looks dark without any colour pops due to the thick black soy sauce. But those who know, know. Despite its look, this dish is tasty AF. Yes let's address the obvious things... Obviously the dish is loaded with carbs and oil but hey, fat is flavour, my friends. This version is from a favourite stall of mine at Dunman Food Centre. The stall is simply called "28", which is also their unit number. Can't miss them - they're facing the road and just at the top of the staircase. Their rendition is always satisfying. Chewy noodles with savoury-sweet sauce wok-fried until super fragrant? Sign me up anytime.

It did have the legit stringy egg noodles in broth. Wantons were quite substantial though in the end the broth was not very memorable. Still not at par with my favourite Tsim Chai Kee in Hong Kong. However, barring a flight to Hong Kong, this was decent enough for the cravings and for my stuffy nose.

So I thought if I go to a Hong Kong Cafe, surely they'll have it? Answer was a big nope! I settled for this mala noodle soup instead, I figured it'd help my blocked nose. Unfortunately the bowl in general fell flat. There's some sharp spicy taste but not enough aroma or taste in general. Or maybe that was my cold? Who knows. All I've learned is that a Hong Kong cafe doesn't have the famous Hong Kong wanton noodles.

Still my perennial favourite - Qiu Rong Ban Mian. I got the one with dumplings and added extra fuzhou fishballs. Lovely bite for the noodles as usual and dumplings/fishballs were tasty. Of course the best part was still the broth that I slurped with glee. Best food when sick - or anytime, really.

Basically vermicelli stir fried until it has a crispy layer. Look at that texture! Though it looks kinda plain and non-photogenic, it was packed with flavour. I think it was cooked with some seafood stock/gravy, that was the flavour I picked up. They also had other excellent dishes, though make sure to make reservations, the queue could get unbearably long!

When one orders "Pattaya" in this kind of restaurant it will come wrapped in this layer of eggs. That time around I chose kway teow (flat rice noodles) as the filling. It was tasty and a bit charred from the stir frying. The egg layer was doused with some ketchup so it had additional tangy flavour to it.
Always good for supper time! They are open 24 hours!

A very typical dish from Indian Muslim restaurant, basically instant noodles (usually Maggi brand) fried (goreng in Malay language) with special spices and accompanied with egg and cucumber. I find this the perfect example of how cultures all mix in this part of the world. I actually like it when it's a bit colder/room temperature, seems like the spices are more pronounced somehow. How about you?

At first I thought it was going to be closer to chilli ban mee (of which there are multiple offerings in Singapore), but it's actually best described as prawn mee with a dollop of chilli gravy. There were other toppings that were not considered standard for prawn mee though such as bean curd pieces and fishcakes. Basically a very unique type of noodle bowl, one would be hard-pressed to find a similar one.
The chilli sauce / gravy was actually not that spicy. Or at least it wasn't the kind of spicy I was expecting. Instead of the biting or burning-your-mouth type of spicy it heated up my body instead and made me sweat a lot. I'm guessing there's some ginger and a healthy dose of pepper in the gravy.
Overall an enjoyable bowl, and a unique experience!

I was often out of luck when I visited! I wanted the char siew and roast pork on Hakka noodles, and wasn't disappointed! In a way it was like a taste of home, with the wide slippery noodles coated with fragrant oil and white pepper, just like my auntie used to make at home! (My auntie is of Hakka descent too, so maybe that's why it's similar?)
Of course the meat was da bomb. Herbal with a tinge of sweetness, and the crispy crunchy skin of the roast pork was just ummmhh.
Sooo satisfying!

I was unsure about posting this because it's not really a noodle dish but hey it has fried beehoon and this wu xiang is really good! The items are freshly fried and the very nice proprietress is always smiley and she can fry any items you want even if the items are not displayed. Fried bee hoon is not clumpy and adequately spiced. The accompanying chilli sauce is great and addictive. I always ask for extra lol. They're only open at nights so it's perfect for supper or late night cravings.

The char siew had that sweet, smoky caramelized taste, and so fatty that it just melted in my mouth with so much flavour (remember fat = flavour). The siew yoke was crispy and tasty but the char siew was still the star by miles. Not a lot to say about the noodles unfortunately. It was decent, but definitely it wasn't concocted to be the star of the dish. The base sauce was a more light soy taste, which I appreciated as it gave way to the excellent char siew. This place is also known for their herbal soups that are brewed in house in huge pots, but as I was dining alone it seemed too much to get soup as well.

What I always enjoy from any kolo mee bowl is how the noodles look white and plain but are actually full with flavours and fragrance. This one was no different, tasty sauce and minced meat, and good char siew too.
I just found it weird though that they didn't give / put any chilli paste. They only gave pickled chilli which admittedly was actually hotter than the usual pickled chilli at other stalls. Maybe it's just their style... Who knows.
