Finally got to try the famous Hainanese chicken rice 🐔🍚 from Chatterbox!
.
The chicken was really tender and I liked that it was deboned, making the dining experience more enjoyable and fuss-free. While a local may not fully appreciate this given the price, I would say it's definitely worth letting tourist friends try this. 👍 Remember to ask for more of their ginger!

If I didn't tell you, would you believe that this soup was vegan? 🌱
.
The bakwan kepiting soup, a Peranakan dish, is traditionally made with prawns, crab meat, pork and pork bones. To appeal to a more diverse groups of diners, The Peranakan recently launched a vegan Tok Panjang set, with this omnipork soup being one of the dishes.
.
The soup was a combination of papaya and cabbage, and overall flavourfully sweet. The best part though was the "meat" balls! They taste almost the same as the usual ones, with even the textures right on point with chewy tendons! Psst: We heard that the "meat" balls are made of soy, rice, shitake mushroom etc. Can't believe it! 😜

Who has friends coming to Singapore during this upcoming F1 weekend? If so, invite them over to The Peranakan for some authentic Peranakan (Straits Chinese) food!

Interestingly, apart from the usual menu, the restaurant offers their famous Tok Panjang set in vegan option. 🌱 Just look at the smorgasbord of food here.
.
The chefs took 6 months to perfect the menu, to ensure that the flavours aren't compromised. Indeed, we found that the dishes overall tasted similar to the real stuff and we felt less (calorie)-guilty, knowing that our dinner was largely vegetable and soy-based. My favourite was the Nasi Ulam although it was recreated without the usual minced fish/ salted fish.

Btw, you need to try their Sambal Belachan too. The usual dried shrimps were replaced by seaweed, but still just as good. Shiok!

To be honest, I was hesitating if I should post this pic on the cover, cos a dish of all-black food may not look that appetising at first glance. But I wouldn't do justice to this dish if I hide it behind. If there is any one quintessential dish that tourists should not miss in Singapore, it’s the Ayam Buah Keluak.

Indeed, looks can be deceiving, but it is actually very rich in flavour. For those who are trying this for the first time, they may not find this appealing due to its appearance. But those who do, are rewarded with its distinctive taste with rich flavours.😍
.
It has such a distinctive taste and earthy texture that no words would do justice to describe this nut. It tasted like dark chocolate perhaps. Though it may require an acquired taste, it’s like a prized possession, one where you savour every last bit.
.
We compared the Buah Keluak here to that of other dining establishments, but found this one to be so much more superior and refined. It was cooked with a special rempah paste consisting of shallots, blue ginger, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, turneric, candlenut, belachan (shrimp paste) and dried chilli. The chicken was really tender too. 👍

Our recommendation is the Devil's Curry, a Eurasian dish prepared by Chef Lionel Chee (@lionelcheeguide) using a medley of ingredients including sausage, cabbage and potatoes.
.
Unlike other types of spicy food where the spiciness goes away after a while, this one was just so intense. The mustard, together with chilli 🌶️, totally elevated this dish to the pinnacle of the spiciness index!🔥

The Eurasian Peranakan menu is available every Sunday from now to 14 July as part of The Peranakan's Kamcheng Peranakan Festival 2019. The menu features this dish and more on a rotational basis.

What's your favourite Peranakan dessert? Mine has got to be the Durian Pengat made from premium D24 durian! Delightfully creamy and rich, this is a must-try for all durian lovers.

And so, we revisited The Peranakan to check out some of their new offerings, and found out that, as part of the ongoing The Peranakan Festival 2019, there is currently a special Eurasian Peranakan menu available every Sunday at the restaurant until 14 Jul 2019.
.
Prepared by Chef Lionel Chee, the menu includes well-known culinary delights from both Peranakan and Eurasian cuisine including the Kacang Botol Salad, Ayam Buah Keluak, Beef Semor and of course Devil's Curry. The Devil's Curry was so hot!! Look out our photos coming up soon. 😉

Finally tried out Violet Oon's at @Ion_Orchard! The menu features a good variety of signature Peranakan dishes, such as Sayur Lodeh (S$13++), Babi Pong Tay ($18++), Ayam Buah Keluak (S$23++), Beef Rendang (S$23++) and Udang Goreng Chilli (S$32++). Amongst the various dishes we tried, this laksa was my favourite. It was not too spicy, yet flavourful enough. The dried version meant that it was definitely less messy and perfect for sharing!
.
While the price is a little on the high side, I would say that it is still a good place to bring tourist friends to, with its variety of local dishes, (toned down) level of spiciness suitable for the foreign palate and convenient location.

Had lots of work to catch up on this weekend, so we decided not to cook. Now, look at all these food we eventually ordered for 2 of us! Felt good enjoying a feast of hawker favourites - without stepping out of our home (and into the heat 😅).

My favourites were:

🔸Lala Sliced Fish Beehoon ($6.20, from Happiness Seafood White Beehoon Stall).

Had one of the most fruitful days in the longest time. Enjoyed a relaxing buffet at The Line and also clocked more than 20,000 steps from this morning and evening's exercise!
.
The pandan chiffon cake from The Line was really fluffy with the right amount of pandan flavour and not overly sweet. Nice! Was tempted to buy one back from the Shophouse Bakery on our way home.
.
@NigellaLawson once said that pandan would be the next big food craze, but I'm sure we Southeast Asians are just too familiar with this ubiquitous ingredient in our parents' kitchens. What type of pandan-based food do you like? 🌿
