Burpple Beyond
Tried Denzy gelato recently using #burpplebeyond and I was pleasantly surprised! They’re located at the bottom of a HDB block near the bishan bus interchange so it’s quite convenient to get to.
Was really amazed at how rich their pistachio gelato is. It’s so fragrant and nutty and not too sweet, and really better than a lot of other pistachio gelatos at other more famous ice cream places. Also enjoyed the mango blood orange sorbet for a good citrusy contrast to cleanse the palette. Wish there were more fruity flavours here but it was a good experience! Would go back.
While the lightly limp rocket and purple wholemeal bun looks slightly alarming, this was my favourite burger! It’s more of a classic type of burger, with a beef chuck patty, bacon, Swiss cheese, rocket, garlic aioli and a hidden slice of beetroot at the bottom of the burger which matches the buns. While I don’t normally enjoy beetroot, it worked well in this burger and gave it more moisture without tasting too earthy. The flavours in this burger weren’t as in your face, so you can actually properly taste the beef, so this was quite enjoyable.
Overall, I wouldn’t pay for the burger at its full price at Fat Boy’s because there are definitely better places at that price point, but it’s quite worth it with the 1 for 1 on burpple beyond. Do note this outlet is quite understaffed though, so the food takes quite a while to come. It’s newly renovated though it seems, so it’s quite nice and bright compared to before!
The Monster Mash is indeed quite a monster. It’s a fried breaded chicken cutlet topped with aged cheddar, bacon and a wasabi mash, and coated in bechamel sauce, with a very beautiful brown honey oat bun. Sadly the burger itself wasn’t as impressive as it looked. The chicken was quite heavily breaded and the meat wasn’t really seasoned at all. I liked the mash potatoes because of the different textures of potatoes though. The bun was kind of a let down though. While it looked beautiful, it was overly toasted so it was kinda hard, and with the fried (and a slightly dry) chicken cutlet, it was kind of hard to stomach.
The Burgatory is a very strong tasting spicy beef burger with chilli queso and jalapeños, with melted aged cheddar, with a sesame seed bun. Personally, I felt that the accompanying flavours were a bit too strong and overpowered the beef patty, but I could see how others would like this Mexican twist on a burger.
The Bikini Bottom sounded nice like the cartoon place in theory, but failed to deliver what was promised. It’s a beef burger with a fried soft shell crab on top, slathered with a creamy salted egg yolk sauce. While the sauce indeed tasted like cream, I couldn’t taste any salted egg yolk at all. The soft shell crab was also quite fishy, so this burger was quite a miss.
Bar bar black sheep is more of a drinking place that’s tucked in Cluny Court next to Botanic Gardens mrt, but I came here for lunch and it was not bad. It’s nothing super outstanding, but it’s quite a value for money meal when you use #burpplebeyond. I preferred the saag chicken, which is a spinach-based gravy, because it tasted somewhat “cleaner” and less meaty. The masala was a lot more full-bodied and had more spices. It’s great to pair with some naans to mop all that gravy up!
Tried out this Chinese noodle place on #burpplebeyond because I was drawn to the ebiko prawn paste balls, which seems to resemble that of in Le Shrimp Ramen, but sadly it was kind of disappointing. The prawn balls, while big, unfortunately tasted quite floury inside, which was very unpleasant.
The noodles with the mushroom sauce was decently tasty, and it came with a tomato soup which I wasn’t expecting too. The tomato soup is quite concentrated and sweet, but I personally don’t enjoy tomato soup. The letdown was that the noodles were on the softer side despite me requesting for the noodles to be less cooked after reading other Burpple reviews. My friend who had the soup version also said his noodles were quite overcooked sadly. At least we had burpple beyond so that it wasn’t as expensive. P.s. you can customise the noodle type and the kind server recommended to us which noodle type would fit our choice of noodle bowl better!
This mushroom risotto with assorted wild mushrooms and porchini inside was incredibly tasty. It’s very rich tasting and the cheese in the risotto complements the earthiness of the mushrooms well. There’s also a lavosh wedged into the risotto so you can mop it up with that! This risotto is on the thicker side, but I loved how umami it was. Totally wiped up this dish.
Went back to Nassim Hill Bakery Bistro Bar to try other dishes with my family and these fish and chips were quite good! The batter wasn’t overly thick and didn’t just become soggy or flake off, and the Atlantic cod inside was cooked perfectly! It was tender and had a stringy texture resembling that of crab or stingray. Very delicious when paired with the tar tar sauce! My only gripe is that I felt that the chips would have been better if they had been thick cut chips- the thin shoestring fries felt a bit out of place.
I loved these donuts. All the bakes here are really good in fact. Clearly they have a great in house baker! Strictly, these donuts are bomboloni (Italian filled donuts), but whatever its name, they were fluffy and absolutely stuffed with cream. The contrast in temperature between the cold cream and the dough itself makes it taste even more amazing, btw. We got two flavours- kaya and chocolate. The homemade kaya one was really fragrant, with a pronounced pandan taste, and was on the sweeter side.
I actually preferred the chocolate one more though. The cream was slightly bitter not too sweet because they used dark chocolate. It also didn’t have the texture of Nutella, but rather, was quite airy and unexpectedly light. This was rly great esp after a heavy meal.
Don’t sleep on these donuts!!! Even if you’re stuffed you can still get one to share with your dining partner!
Thanks Burpple and Nassim Hill Bakery Bistro Bar for the eatup!
Their hazelnut dream cake is quite accurately, a dream. It’s a light, moist chiffon cake, layered with Italian meringue buttercream, with praline, milk chocolate ganache, and chopped hazelnuts. It’s not too sweet and really well balanced - so although it can taste quite rich, it somehow doesn’t feel like you’re eating that much! The slice is also pretty massive (this pic does no justice), so this is quite worth it.

This chilli crab pasta was not bad. It had rather sizeable crab chunks and it wasn’t too spicy either. The sauce is a tangy, slightly sweet cream sauce and clung well to every strand of pasta. This would probably be better to share though, or it could get a bit overwhelming.
