Japanese 🇰🇷
I usually come to the sushi bar just for their chirashi don (seriously, this is the bomb, MUST ORDER). But this time, we decided to also order some extra sides to try and this dish was recommended on the menu so we went along with it. One of the better beef cubes I’ve had, maybe cos it’s wagyu, so the meat was a lot more tender and juicy. The sauce was a teriyaki sauce with notes of garlic infused and the crispy garlic chips were an absolute delight. Best to eat this hot though when it first arrives sizzling on your pan...!! 😋
Thinkkkk it was $25, not absolutely certain but for this price point, I think The Sushi Bar’s fared much better. The sashimi here, while fresh, was just not the best cuts - not fatty enough and some slices were tendinous. But they’ve really got the ambience going here, hidden away on the second floor with interior decor almost resembling a legit Japanese restaurant. Butttt may not revisit haha
Today’s MAJOR craving from before CB times. I dare say this is one of the best chirashi dons you can get in SG at this price point with its fresh cuts of tuna, swordfish, scallops, yellowtail, salmon and aburi salmon belly. My favourites have got to be the aburi salmon belly and yellowtail - super thick and fatty 😍 I know there are other chirashi dons out there cheaper but really, this one’s quality is worth it for $24.90.
The sushi bar does takeaways and deliveries during the CB period so do support them! It’s a pity I stay so far away from their outlets at Orchard/Tampines so... till after the CB then!!
The yellowtail was one of our faves here! Super thick, fat and buttery 👍🏼
Quite worth for $3.20! Salmon belly was fatty and sweet
After watching sethlui’s video on how this restaurant operates (double conveyer belt system, nigiri making machine), the bf clamoured to come here to try out this kaiten sushi restaurant. This salmon belly was fatty and not the most thick but not super thin either. With the torched till melty and oozy cheese, the entire mouth was even more smooth and decadent.
Pro tip: Get this instead of the normal salmon belly! Somehow the salmon belly here was a bit fatter and thicker
Third time here and this time, decided to go for the salmon chirashi don! Sashimi cubes were thickkk and fresh. Portion could have been bigger but nothing to complain about when it’s one for one on BB! (PSA: BB deals are expiring end of the month!! Please please let them be renewed again 😭)
Sumptuous, wholesome meal consisting of a gyu don, chawanmushi, onsen egg, miso soup and free flow pickles and radish! All for $17.50 after GST and service charge!!! Don’t underestimate the gyu don which came with beef, cabbage, mushrooms and braised tofu as well as additional sukiyaki sauce on the side for maximal enjoyment 😌
Came on a Friday evening and there was just a short queue (waited about 20min!) Do note that there are only counter seats but this made the entire dining experience very fun as we got to watch the chefs cook our gyu dons in front of us.
Can’t quite compare to Man Man - the unagi isn’t as crispy and the dashi soup broth isn’t as tasty. But still pretty worth it to get a sizeable portion of fresh unagi!
Came on a weekday evening and there was a short queue but luckily you can reserve on chope in advance. There were some interesting seats sitting on cushions at traditional Japanese low tables which might be quite fun!
The other bowl we got for the burpple one for one set. As you can see from that delightful pink colour with some blowtorch charred bits, they were really generous with the mentaiko sauce! That being said, if you’re not a big fan of mentaiko or if you prefer to eat your chirashi ai naturale, this may get a bit cloying for you. Overall, YAY for another great meal with burpple! 🥳
$30.90 but paid only $15.50 after burpple beyond for a set of chirashi don with mentaiko tamago on the side, mentaiko ebi, salad, miso soup and refillable drinks = happy belly and happy wallet!! 🤗 Kei Kaisendon definitely did not compromise on the variety and generous quantity of fresh sashimi in the chirashi don and they also paid attention to fine details such as the miso soup actually having ingredients like mixed vegetables, salmon and chicken.
This one was sadly a letdown.. While individual ingredients were nice, they just didn’t gel together with the cream sauce which I felt was a little too thin and not creamy enough. Maybe it’s in comparison to the mentaiko... If you’re here, I’d say go for the mentaiko pasta for sure and if you need something to cut the taste of the mentaiko, maybe consider the omu rice which was still not bad! Orrr if you can’t get enough of mentaiko, go for the mentaiko toast!!! No individual photo for that (you can see it peeking in the corner here) but it was 👍🏼👍🏼
