I have always been very excited to try zoodles (simply shredded zucchini) but I guess this just didn't quite meet my expectations. This zucchini linguine with walnut "meatballs" ($20) arrived shockingly huge in amount, consisting of what I guessed was 5 zucchinis worth. Brownie points for generosity, but the zucchini weren't sufficiently dried, hence diluting the tomato sauce coating each strand and leaving a pool of water at the base. The "cheese" was also bland, and partly soggy due to the wetness of the dish (perhaps they could've used nutritional yeast to add some flavour to it). The meatballs, too, weren't too my liking, maybe I'm just not used to it.

Also, their toilet needs a higher level of cleanliness.

Happy hour til 6:30PM; $8++ for a glass of bubbly Prosecco. Red & white wines at the same price. $14++ for a martini & some other cocktails.

At an affordable price point, the Butler's Steak ($25+) is a Black Angus Flat Iron cut. I enjoyed it very much, with great flavour on its own (I didn't touch the salt at all) & decent texture. At our happy party table of 6, however, there was 1 plate of steak that was tougher to chew than the rest. I mean, Flat Irons aren't meant to melt in your mouth.. But that plate was very tough.

You can add on a small (but sufficient) portion of sauce for $2+ each, but personally I found the steak flavourful on its own & didn't need any sauce. However, if I had to choose, I'd pick the Béarnaise sauce over the Peppercorn one.

The Butler's Steak is available in limited quantities daily-- if that runs out, or you just wish to try something else (like I do, the next time I visit), you can opt for the Skirt Steak (slightly cheaper at $22+), which is a 200-day grain-fed Angus slab of beef.

Thanks Burpple for the invite, & Butler's Steakbar for hosting! 💕

If you love your pork, Bazuka Yakibuta's Caramel and Crackling Roast Pork Donburi ($9.80) is the way to go. Each bowl comes with slabs of pork laced with golden crackling, and glistening slices of deliciously caramelised roast pork sitting on Japanese rice. For added satisfaction, add a perfect onsen egg, mix in the yolky lusciousness, and dig right in. Single roast pork bowls are also on the menu for those who favour one kind over the other!

Bai Nian is one of the must-tries at People's Park Food Centre. Have been patronizing it since it opened here few years back.

Bai Nian is also known to serve bowls of Yong Tau Foo with standard ingredients instead of those that you get to pick on your own. Each hearty bowl comes with hand made ingredients that include bitter gourd, tau kwa (deep fried bean curd), prawn balls, minced pork balls and the black, white, gold rolls which are stuffed beancurd skin rolls. I can't really pinpoint what's the difference between the different colored rolls but the meat inside was well marinated. For someone like me who doesn't eat bitter gourd usually because of its bitterness, I could actually accept the bitter gourd here, not much bitterness as it's fried. But my favorite has got to be the hand made prawn balls which were really fresh and juicy, and there's so much prawn meat! Same goes for the pork balls that also had black fungus.

The aroma and taste of the clear soup was even better after a spoonful of fresh chopped spring onions was added. You could ask for additional beehoon at no extra cost, or for mine, I didn't want beehoon, so it was replaced with 2 additional pieces of the rolls. Such a craving on rainy days!

The Tastemakers tasted a dozen dishes on their outing, but for many, the fishballs and fishcakes from this stall are one of their favourite finds. This is definitely not your run-of-the-mill, factory made fishballs. According to Tastemaker Casey Tan, the Teochew stall owners use fresh ikan parang (wolf herring) in their fish paste, resulting in a lovely "Q-ness" that Tastemaker Julius Lim loves. Prices range from 50 cents to $4 — do get the otah fishcake and tofu cheesecake! Everything is fried on the spot and served steaming hot with a piquant chili sauce on the side. The variety can be staggering, so it might be wise to take Tastemaker Julius' advice to have the stall-owners pick out a selection for you.

This spacious cafe along Frankel Avenue is a popular meeting spot for many Easties, where there's ample space for you and your friends to catch up over light bites and great coffee. There's free WiFi here too, so if you're planning to get some work done, have the signature Flight Coffee ($8.50) — a cappuccino served with a shot of espresso on the side — it will keep you going for hours. Feeling peckish? Nibble on the Thai Milk Tea Loaf ($5) — fragrant tea cake slathered with a luscious chayen sauce.

Located at Duxton Hill, MavRx (stylised with a capital R) is a small hole-in-the-wall joint that serves nothing but coffee. This minimalist, VERY Instagram-worthy shop boasts monochromatic decor and wooden benches for seats. When available, always go for the Chocolate Coffee Cone ($8) — essentially a piccolo latte in a sturdy waffle cone that you can nom on once you're done with your coffee. The chocolate coffee cone comes in three flavours — white, milk and dark chocolate. Otherwise, order the super fun Cold Brew ($5). Served in a large syringe that you can "inject" into your cup of ice, it's great for a mid-day caffeine boost or a pitstop after dining nearby!

After brunching at Botanist, stroll a few doors down to this minimalistic ice cream cafe for comforting, home-churned ice cream. We like that the guys running the place are earnest and provide consistently personable service, and are always up for a chat about their favourite topic — ice cream! Prices start at a reasonable $3.90 for a scoop, with premium flavours like their wholly popular Black Sesame priced at $4.60. Burpple Tastemaker Xing Wei Chua describes the black sesame to be intense and rich, yet lusciously smooth and well-balanced. Other flavours to try include the Caramelised Strawberry, Pistachio and Bailey Brownie. If you're with a friend, consider sharing the Charcoal Waffle ($6). It is crisp around the edges and soft in the centre, and there's also a very slight hint of earthiness that adds character.

On days when it's not only ice cream but an icy dessert that you crave, head on down to this Havelock cafe for three-inch-thick toasts topped with ice cream. The Gula Melaka Coconut Thick Toast ($14.90) is a long-time favourite among the Burpple community. Expect a pillowy toast with crispy edges, topped with handcrafted coconut ice cream, grated coconut flakes and gula Melaka syrup. Burpple Tastemaker Cassie Ong loves how the slightly salted buttery toast complements the rich coconut ice cream. While you're here, check out their selection of daring ice cream flavours (from $3.80 per scoop). There are classics like Matcha and Mango, but there are also some, like the Melon & Parma Ham, that have made us stop in our tracks in the past.
