Be hit with a pleasant lightness of the broth with the Sliced Fish Soup ($4.80). The soup came with a very clean taste, no hint of fishiness at all, a generous amount of fluffy fried fish, vegetables and tofu, topped with Chinese seaweed and crispy fried egg (!!!). Dipping it in the fermented bean sauce really helped to elevate this humble dish to the next level. For those looking for a light meal, this is a tasty soup that doesn’t compromise on flavour.
.
The Tom Yum Fried Fish Soup ($5.40) was packed with so much punch you will salivate before the broth touches your lips. Definitely a well balanced mix of spicy and sour that will awake you from dreamland and warm your tastebuds heartily. And again, the crazily sinful deep fried egg babies add so much flavour to the soup, you have to get a bowl on its own to enjoy the extra oomph!!
.
Visit before 3pm to avoid disappointment, their fish soup sells out fast!

And so they say the best showcase of a culture is in its food, this restaurant has been nominated by Doug’s North Indian ex-boss, as the cuisine closest to the authentic taste of his hometown.
.
For starters, always get something barbecued, easy to eat, to begin the meal experience. A tikka will do the trick. We had half a chicken tandoori ($14). The chicken is tender, pleasantly marinated in a concoction of spices that coat the pieces and sets this apart from your casual grill.
.
Now enter the naan. Soft and fluffy, the naan ($3.50) is easily torn into bite-sized pieces, easy to savour if you enjoy that freshly baked texture with a little steam coming from the bread.
.
Now for the perennial favourite, the butter chicken ($14.50). The primary use of this dish is for dipping your naan, to soak up all the goodness (or unhealthiness😅) of the butter curry. Chicken is tender, flavourful, and comes in little morsels best eaten with the naan. Just a light heat, this is less spicy compared to the tandoori but the curry gravy is heavenly, and with a good hit from the spices.
.
Chicken dum Briyani ($12.50) topped off our meal. The long grain rice is extremely fragrant with cardamom seeds and anise star delighting the senses, definitely one of the most fragrant chicken briyani around. Chicken pieces are generous, fragrant, and will definitely keep you wanting more!
.
Washing down all the lovely culture in the meal is a cup of Teh Halia ($3). Ginger infused milk tea, this gives a soothing heat that goes down well with all the spicy food.
Ready for your immersion yet? 😏

Here, you will only find fresh and smooth sliced batang in your bowl as Uncle Henry only uses expensive Batang fish. So remember to order fresh slices instead of fried fillets, you'd want all the untainted goodness from the fish! If we're feeling spendy, we would sometimes order fish belly for the extra smoothness, it's really quite shiok!
.
Especially love the fragrant bits of crushed Ti Por! Broth tastes natural and lightly sweet from boiling of bones, along with yee mee as noodle choice. Best part, there's no stinky smell from fish.
.
The soup was so good on it's own but the homemade chilli added a tangy heat, sour and spicy at the same time! Read more (+bonus pic of Uncle Henry!): www.atasteofdojo.com/tai-seng-fish-soup

Here, meat and vegetables are charged by portions, rather than weight. Vegetables are $1 per portion, meat at $2, and seafood $3. Tossed in mala chilli oil, dried chillis, ginger and more than 20 types of herbs and spices, their version of mala xiang guo contains a copious amount of garlic, and almost no numbness due to the sheer amount of peppercorn. Everything we ordered was veg, so this dish might as well be mala salad..Who needs meat when this dish is already so tasty!? The vegetables were crunchy and soaked up all the spicy essence like a sponge. The mala sauce was appetising and had a slight kick, pleasantly fragrant, not too heavy or salty, and quite delicious. 中辣 is definitely bearable! We paid $16 for this huge bowl, pretty cheap I must say! Portions definitely run big here, so if you come as a couple, you’d probably want to order fewer items! If you are all about that bowl of honestly exceptional fish soup, this stall at Amoy Food Centre is no doubt, THE ONE.
.
The light, savoury stock or "ceng" as the Teochews call it, is made purely from boiled Batang (mackerel) bones, mung beans, and anchovies. Han Kee’s standard fish soup costs $5 and works up to $9 for a large bowl. Honestly, the quantity and quality of the fish are beyond words. The biggest plus - each bowl is served with generous portion of thickly sliced fresh, silky, chunky fish, and you will never get the ‘chow chor’ (fish odour) smell as quite commonly tasted in other fish soup. The clear soup is lightly sweet and fragrant from garlic bits too. This is what we call value-for-money.
.
Han Kee’s fish soup is certainly the best fish soup we have ever had, and we swear by it. Definitely worth every single bit of our $5, or even $9. Read more: www.atasteofdojo.com/han-kee-sliced-fish-soup/

We are usually not that intrigued by similar Chinese dimsum stalls but these Xiao Long Baos look legit. They are plump, not too dense, and with each bite, the warm soup oozes out, boasting a light pork tang along with tender and soft meat. For the size, these babies come in sixes at $4.50, really good value for money for the quality.
.
As we tried to ration our food intake, we thought the Pork Dumpling Noodles Dry ($4) would allow us to try out their Pork Dumpling with Chilli while still enjoying the ramen, without over-ordering two separate dishes. Here, the wanton had a silky skin, but lightly chewy so that they did not fall apart immediately. The filling had a good proportion of meat to chives, not forgetting the meat was of similar tenderness to the XLBs, but really really memorable. Tossed in fragrant chilli sesame oil, each mouthful was a delight to behold, sweet, spicy, savoury and everything nice!
.
We are indeed so blessed to be able to enjoy these not only cheap, but restaurant-quality alternatives tediously prepared by hand. We will definitely be back to support, again and again. Read more: www.atasteofdojo.com/supreme-ramen-xiao-long-bao/

Unlike some mala places, the ingredients here are charged by the number of ingredients picked, and not by weight. For 6 types of vegetables, we paid $8 and this is just nice for both of us! Probably the cheapest we have spent on mala to date. Best eaten with a bowl of fluffy rice, this bowl was served with mouth-watering aroma. Personal favourites are bean threads, fried beancurd sheets, wood ear, golden and enoki mushrooms (wow, just realised how big of a mushroom fan we are!), potato noodles, and kai lan (but it ran out today so we got dou miao, Doug’s fav). Who needs meat when veggies are so amazing in a big bowl of yummy mala?
.
The mala xiang guo is really fragrant, and their potato noodles are a must order - thin, chewy and really delightful. The enoki mushrooms did well in absorbing some flavour from the mala paste, and tasted savoury and slightly peppery.
.
For zhong la (中辣), the dish was sufficiently spicy, and a tad numb but not overly tingly, plus it wasnt drizzled with peppercorns all over! We asked for less oil and the dish came definitely not slurpy oily! Seasoned with nuts and coriander, they make for a great combination when tossed around in the piquant mala sauce. Slightly savoury but not overpowering, the sauce allowed the flavor to shine through. This is a great place to indulge in an addictively flavoursome bowl of mala hot pot.
.
Saltiness: 3/5
Numb: 3.5/5
Spicy: 3/5

If you’re working near Old Airport Road, you can’t miss this stall right smack in the middle. Opened sometime in mid 2017, this stall is owned by a Thai couple, dishing out authentic flavours.
.
First up, we have the Green Curry Chicken ($6.5). If you’re looking for a curry with strong “gao” flavours and thick soup, this is definitely for you! Comes piping hot with tender chicken pieces, in a thick curry that’s just best on white fluffy rice. The curry contains red chili, basil and eggplants, boiled down till soft, and keeps the tastebuds just wanting more, spoonful after spoonful. This can get really addictive if your office is nearby and you always have this option open for lunch. ;)
.
We also had the Basil Leaf Minced Chicken with Rice ($5.5), topped with a sunny side up. The hero is in the basil leaves, chili, and the sauces! Makes the dish really flavourful, savoury with a slight sweetness. Our guess is that the gravy contains fish sauce and a dash of cooking wine which brings out the fragrance that goes so well with the basil leaves! Great to have this on your mental lunch menu, definitely satisfying!
.
We try out the Spicy Minced Chicken Salad ($10) which Jo had previously on her trip to Thailand. This didn’t disappoint, and the minced chicken is wonderfully seasoned with fish sauce, chili flakes, lime juice and steam veggies to give it some crunchy texture, and a wonderful assortment of fresh herbs to bring it all together.
.
Great flavours that you definitely don’t wanna miss if you’re working nearby and craving a quick Thai fix!
