I’ve been to Hai Di Lao once when I moved to Singapore and I couldn’t say I enjoyed the experience. It was too loud, too brash for me. However, today, dining in their private rooms was a totally different experience altogether. Totally enclosed and far from the madding crowd, we were like in a world of our own. The service was impeccable and so was the food. I personally love the black pork here. Portions are generous and we were so full that we had to almost roll out of our plush room.

This time it was the Nasu Don. This eggplant and minced meat rice bowl just spells comfort food. Whilst I enjoyed it, I wished there was an option to spice it up or a 1/2 and 1/2 option for this and the Mapo Don. At least it will give diners an option. Still non spice lovers who love eggplant will enjoy this. Hearty and comforting.

Silky soft tofu cooked in a sauce that has a strong enough hint of mala but not overpowering that leaves you with what a friend use to say, bee stung lips. Just goes so well with rice. I can see this becoming one of my go to comfort food on cold, rainy days.

I decided to try their 1/2 and 1/2 combo. For SGD10.80, you get a half portion of Dan Dan Mian, 1/2 portion of their signature Mapo Tofu rice and a drink. Their Dan Dan Mian was nice with hints of peanut sauce. I think I will try their soup version the next time I am back as I noticed the patrons on the next table slurping away.

Then we pretty much order away depending what we fancy for the evening.
