For pork noodles in SS15, Ooi Noodle House comes to mind. Here, the owner insists on cooking each bowl on its own to preserve quality, and we can attest that the effort translates well into taste. It's also why the stalwart shop warns diners of a 40-minute wait (minimum) at lunch. Thankfully, the air-conditioned setting makes it a bearable one. Show up early before 11am to cut the waiting time short and bring a few of your foodie friends for company! Priced from RM8, each bowl is a trove of minced pork, lean pork slices, liver, intestines and crispy pork lard. These trimmings are tasty and portioned well, but the secret is in the soup. Deeply flavoured, its cloudy consistency reminds us of pork-based ramen broth. Add an egg to your bowl for RM1 — when stirred in, the wobbly yolk helps bring the soup to its full potential.

This is undoubtedly a gift from the food gods when you’re having hangover. A hearty helping of hot herbal broth with all the beef offals (beef, stomach, tendons, beef balls) you could think of is the perfect way to get started on the road to recovery. With several locations in its name (the original in Tangkak, Johor), happy to report the Kuchai Lama branch and Puchong branch offer consistency in both serving and flavour. You also get to choose the noodles to go with the broth, from plain noods and mihun, to lai fun and koay teow. Or add rice for RM1.50 per bowl. Sean Yoong describes it best — “a satisfyingly balanced bowl of energising carbs and nourishing protein.” Now, eat till your heart’s content.

I really enjoyed the accompanying sweet scallion soup here. I guess if you’re paying RM15.80 for wanton mee, the soup better be quality right? An enjoyable dish altogether, with noodles springy and light. Three fried pork wantons, egg a-runny yolk, sweet shrooms and kailan. Generous and totes worth the price tag. Ended the meal with an equally delectable dessert — Milo Pie. More deconstructed than actual pie, it’s a beautiful composition of vanilla ice cream, milo, ping pong chocolate and salted ganache, and whipped cream. WOw. I’d come back just for this dessert.
