A firm favourite for roasts in our books is Toast & Roast, the homely locale tucked away in a quieter part of SS2. The cuts of Premium Char Siew (from RM11) here are distinct — a sweet-sticky exterior leads you to its heavenly hybrid of juicy fat and delicious meat. A choice carb-pairing is the Hakka Noodles T&R (RM6.50). There is a more economical option for the noodles topped with single-portion char siew (RM7.50), but we assure you that there can never be too much char siew, so splurge away. Weekends are when families in the residential neighbourhood pop in for breakfast, so come instead for weekday lunch when it's just you and your char siew. The siew yuk at Wong Mei Kee is made of dreams. That, and bossman Datuk Robert's years of experience. Bring friends, family or even colleagues (anyone will enjoy it) — just make sure they're a patient bunch because the legendary dish warrants a long wait. The thick strips of Siew Yuk (from RM17) here glisten with three luscious layers: a golden-brown crackling skin, melt-in-your-mouth fat and tender lean meat. Arrive early and secure a seat in anticipation of this crowd-favourite, which only hits the chopping board at 12.30pm. Roast duck is often a daytime affair, and save for food trucks, not many establishments serve the dish in the evening. Enter Loong Foong — despite being a seafood restaurant, they've made a name for themselves with well-executed roast duck at dinnertime. Our advice is to duck the rest of the menu and go straight for the winning dish! From RM7 a portion, the duck arrives with a shiny gloss and while its meat is tender and palatable, the skin steals the show with its resemblance to Peking duck's crisp, airy skin. The restaurant serves only white rice, but fret not. Your order of roast duck gains you a side of dark, rich duck sauce that is made for spooning over your rice.

Celebrate special occasions at this Spanish restaurant with their Roasted Suckling Pig (RM188 for half). The butterflied piglet is carefully roasted, similar to Chinese-style suckling pig, until the skin turns incredibly and deliciously crisp and the meat beneath becomes moist. But the scrumptious suckling pig is not all you're paying for — your dish also comes with a unique experience of Spanish traditions. Upon order, the waiters hand you a plate with instructions to knock it three times against the wooden board. Here's where it gets fun — after using the plate to cut the pig into three parts, you get to hurl it to the floor! The ritual is said to cast out bad luck for diners — a perfect fit for birthdays.

But the next time you hit up this heritage restaurant, make it a weekend afternoon with your family to snag a plate of their weekends-only Roast Pork (from RM16). Served Swiss roll-style, the pork belly is loved for its soft, lean meat coupled with a scrumptious pistachio-peach stuffing and homemade apple sauce. There is also an option to make this a full meal with potatoes and blanched vegetables on the side (additional RM3.50). Better still, bring a whole roast pork home for celebrations — the 2kg slab costs RM170 and will require ordering at least three days in advance.
