More than just pho. Why is there no "Vietnamese" category on Burpple?

I also had a craving for fresh Vietnamese spring rolls, so I ordered the Gọi Cuốn ($5.50 nett). They might've forgotten our order until 15 mins after we tucked in to our noodles. When we stood up to enquire about it, they immediately snapped into action to prepare this dish - & it was served shortly after (within minutes).

The ingredients are fresh & decent, but nothing outstanding. Satisfies the craving, I guess. It wasn't served with sauce & you have to grab/DIY your sauce from the counter near the cashier. This dinner entailed a lot of standing up & walking, but at this reasonable price point & casual space, no major complaints from me.

Here's the Pho Bo Dac Biet ($11 nett) that I briefly mentioned in my last review. As you can see, it has more variety to the meat.. & the broth is lighter. I guess it depends on what you're in the mood for!

I ordered Viet Lap's Pho Bo Kho ($11 nett) as I was in the mood for something robust & comforting. This beef stew pho has a hearty broth that is a little bit sweet - if you want to go to flavourtown, this is it.

The only gripe that I have with this is that the meat had quite a bit of fat & tendons - which may put some people off. Also, the meat served is just of one kind - no variety; it doesn't have the combination of meat that the Pho Bo Dac Biet ($11 nett) has, although the trade-off for me is the lighter broth in that one. You win some, you lose some.

However, in all - good quantity, sufficiently filling, & delicious. I'd order this again.

The Đặc Biệt Banh Mi came a close 2nd for me. It's the Chef's special & a cult favourite - & I can see why. It's Nonette's exclusive recipe of Vietnamese cold cuts, shallots & soy chicken liver pâte, cha lua (Vietnamese mortadella pork sausage). thit xa xiu (caramelized pork loin), jambon thit nguoi (Vietnamese style porchetta)..& of course, the full works of veggies too.

Catch the Nonette X TBB collab this weekend (25 - 27 Nov 2022), only at TBB's Fort Canning outlet. Thanks Damian for the invite, & our lovely hosts for the hospitality! 💕

My favourite Nonette Banh Mi was the Poulet Rôti ($12) - tender soy & garlic roast chicken thigh with garlic egg mayo.

I like how each Banh Mi is generously stuffed with fresh veggies.. Cucumbers, daikon, carrot, pickles, chilli slices & coriander - gloriously spilling out of the baguette as you chow down. Get a napkin, this will be messy... In the best way possible 😂

Got the Beef Banh Mi ($5.50 nett), is shiok & flavourful. Option to have/omit chilli - I said yes & the chilli padi slices packed a nice oomph to some of the bites.

The baguette is so crispy & easy to chow down on. I hate it when bread is tough & my teeth feel like they're about to dislodge from my gums. This was anything but that. Very satisfied.

Admittedly, with my big appetite, this alone wasn't sufficient to fill me up. But dang, I'm glad I made the trip here because it was delicious. Should've bought 2x Banh Mis - maybe a pork one too.

The Gỏi Cuốn (4 for $7, 6 for $10.50) really got substance one sia. I used to not enjoy Vietnamese spring rolls, but something changed one day. Now I love them to bits & this one was EXTREMELY PLEASURABLE with the generous ingredients inside.

I loved the soup in the Pho Dac Biet ($8.00), I slurped everything up to the last drop. It is apparently their "special noodle soup" - not overly herby (not that I'd mind if it were), & there actually is a raw egg inside that you'd mix around to add creaminess to the soup.

Journey to the east for Vietnamese Food. It didn't disappoint, though I would be a bit hesitant to say this blows my mind. I did enjoy this for its good price point, tasty factor, & I would like to return for comforting Vietnamese cuisine.

I had a bite of the Bún Thịt Nướng ($7.50) & to me, it was alright. I had a bite of this, it was alright. I feel like I have had better grilled pork with rice noodle combinations elsewhere. Didn't feel like I needed to eat too much of this because I preferred my Pho, hands down.

Two options at Saigon Food Street (stall 17) for Beef Phở: Normal ($2.50) & Large ($5.00). The prices for Normal potions are the first thing you see when you look up at the menu, so you think the food here is super affordable. But step up to the counter & see the menu inside, just above the kitchen-- those are the prices for the Large bowls.

Don't get me wrong, though, the Large bowls are still very affordable-- & I'm pleased to report that the proportion of beef slices to noodles was just right in the Large bowl. Does it taste like a certain Vietnamese restaurant's Beef Phở? Yes, & it costs about half the price. I am mighty pleased & I will return.

The friendly uncle serving me said I should try the Premium Beef Phở ($8.00) next time... We shall see. I was quite happy with my ordinary bowl of phở. The noodles were silky smooth, thin beef slices nicely cooked (only a few pieces that required more chewing than I would've liked). The soup was light yet tasty; I drank it all to the last drop. I do miss the herbs that come with traditional phởs in Vietnam, but I don't think that's very common to serve here in Singapore so I won't fault them for that.

I actually thought this stall was in a coffeeshop with but a few stalls. Pleasant surprise to find that there are 28 stalls in total in this hawker centre managed by NTUC Foodfare. With so much variety, it's worth a re-visit. I will be back ☺

Beef Tenderloin & Meatballs Phở Soup ($10.90 lunch set, includes 1 drink)

Very ordinary beef phở; simple broth that isn't terrible, but lacks the herby taste that authentic phở has. I can't imagine myself craving this, but I might order this on a rainy day. Meatballs were more tasty than the beef tenderloin. Overall, an average dish.

Heard the summer rolls are delicious, but I've yet to try them.
