Not Bad
🇯🇵
I didn't make any reservation and reached about 12pm to a short queue in front of me. When I left 10mins before 1pm, there was no queue. So if you are interested, I say just go and queue during lunch!

I get why many people like this. While waiting, you are treated by the waft of charcoal aroma whenever their doors are opened. Then once inside, you can see the chefs preparing your unagi in the open kitchen right in front of you. And most importantly, their unagi (especially the skin) is grilled until really crispy and charcoal fragrant.
🇯🇵
But, unfortunately, the kabayaki unagi was too salty for me. I am not sure if it was the sauce or if they added extra salt, but it was so salty I couldn't finished the unagi. Not even their freshly grated wasabi could help.
🇯🇵
The thing is I'm probably one of the rare ones who think so. As I squint my eyes from the salt overdose, I instinctively look around me to find consensus. What I saw were mainly satisfied faces and empty plates/bowls.
🇯🇵
I suppose people like me who have a lighter palate and who usually ask for less salt at zichar stalls should avoid this. Otherwise, you probably will enjoy this. For me, I prefer Bonta Bonta.

So it was really such a pity that this pasta was not better executed. Where many crab pastas get the crab meat wrong (with yucky meat), this one got the pasta wrong.
🦀
The thicker than usual linguine was in my opinion slightly undercooked such that I could still taste the flour. Pasta sauce was also a little on the bland side and even though garlics were added, they have failed to fry the garlic till fragrant to capitalize on this wonderful condiment. Overall, it wasn't a bad pasta but a mediocre one.

But this is a nice hidden cafe to chill at if you are at Novena. Coffee is pretty good and the cafe has a very nice ambience (albeit a little warm) with charming indoor communal or window bar seats and a nice garden outdoor alfresco area.

And my favourite for the night.

Mocofava is originally a Brazilian dish made from boiling cow's feet. But The Soup Spoon has made an adapted version from Chicken instead.
🍲
A pretty good soup made from chicken collagen stock, beans, chicken sausages and a long list of healthy ingredients then topped with a beautiful soft boiled egg. A homely soup that's not salty and enjoyable though not outstanding.

Thank you for having us, @thesoupspoonsg and @sadia.sg

And for those who don't take clams, you will get a medium prawn as a substitute. Taste is not bad and I like that it's not overly sweet. Unfortunately, there's not enough wok hei for it to be outstanding for me. So I won't recommend you to make a trip down specially for this but if you pass by, this is worth a try.

And seeing the long queue they had just fueled my expectations.
🍜
But I was kinda disappointed. It wasn't bad actually (except the pork lard, which was soooo disappointing) but wasn't that good either

While you get a burst of gula melaka syrup when you bite into an Ondeh Ondeh, here you get gula melaka syrup dripping from the center layer of the cake as you cut into it.
🍰
Taste is pretty close to that of an actual Ondeh Ondeh but I still prefer Ondeh Ondeh itself.

Because they dished out the last Dou Fu Hua just as I was ordering 😫

On a bright note, the kitchen reopens at 5pm... Should I come back at 5pm 🤔

Anyway, for the time being, I had the Watermelon Sorbet SGD 3.50 Nett instead.
🍉
It tasted like Bandung more than Watermelon and is a special flavor you don't usually find elsewhere.

Shredded duck spread served with crispy baguette. It's pretty good but a little on the salty side.

Reasonably tasty food at a reasonable price.
Cake Spade is famous for their strawberry tofu cheese cake but because the mango version is seasonally available only on April-May, I chose the Mango. The tofu cheese cake is light and smooth with a sweetness level that is right on point. Biscuit crust is also not bad and my only complain is about the mango jelly. The mango slices in the jelly is sourish and too tough (perhaps not ripe enough), so much so that I find it hard to cut through the jelly with my metal fork. And this is in-spite the mango being in season.
Similar to our Chinese Roast Pork though it is served with salad and mashed potatoes instead of rice. The pork belly has crispy skin and melt in your mouth fats but the amount of fats is simply too much for me! Otherwise a good dish.
A slightly smaller than usual duck confit that has very crispy skin and fork tender meat. Overall a good rendition except that the meat tends to be a little dry if taken without the sauce and that I personally dislike having corn as my veggie. Also, for a savory dish like this, I think it will be better to pair it with a sweet-sourish sauce to balance the saltish taste than to pair it with the existing mashed potato sauce, which only adds to the saltiness. Otherwise, a decent duck confit at this price. Worth a try if you are nearby and craving for duck confit but does not warrant a special trip down to have it.
These are 1/2 dozen deshelled land snails served in pesto tomato sauce and with crispy baguette at the side. On the salty side but not unbearably so. Pretty good though I prefer my snails in their shells and drenched in garlic herb butter instead. Worth a try if you like the pesto version of escargots.
