Hawker Snacks!
There was a little buzz on social media when Guan Hin moved over to Chinatown Complex so I’ve been wanting to try it. Sadly, it was never opened when I went over so I had to wait until last weekend to finally have It. IT WAS SO WORTH IT!
The carrot cake bits were so fluffy and soft, I could break it with my tongue. Two thumbs up for the super flavorful egg that has been thrown over the sizzling hot plate with chye Poh and garlic. Everything in this dish is what you can ask for in a carrot cake. $3 for the portion you see here is a really reasonable price too!
I'm a sucker for Chen Shun Mei Tauhuey. The beancurd is so delicate and breaks at the lightest touch, testament to its softness. Also love the sugar syrup that almost tastes like it is infused with pandan leaves. This is the best dish $1 can get you here at Serangoon Garden Market & Food Centre!! #BurppleBestOfSerangoon
These fat, juicy and crispy panfried dumplings were quite decent for its price. $6 for 10 pieces was just nice for 2 people. My only gripe - the skin is a little too thick /:
The crispy carrot cake here is.... LEGIT!!! The carrot cake here is so well fried, the eggy starchy base crackles inside your mouth, giving way to the pillowy soft carrot cake bits. I love how the sweet black sauce was used in just the right amounts, hence the resulting black carrot cake isn't overly sweet and still had the fragrance of the caipoh. The white carrot cake is my preferred of the two and that's just because I am biased towards the white ones.
Cheers to a place that makes their own skins! Ann Chin is probably one of the last few places in Singapore that still does that, which is why it's pohpiah doesn't taste too 'floury'. Thin skin + generous fillings of turnips, fried crispy flour and garlic makes this $1.50 snack so so worth every cent.
HUGE HUGE HUGE!! But this is so good! Crispy batter, chewy squid. It's great for sharing, and helps to split the $7 bill too. We had the seaweed flavour one which reminds us of McDonald's seaweed shaker fries lol.
My dad's favourite and it still remains popular amongst the local crowd. The secret to this is the scallion oil they dip the muachee in and the the overflowing portion of peanuts 😍
One of the purest, softest, fluffiest tapioca cakes I've had. This is a store I must visit whenever I head over to Maxwell. They're usually sold out by 12pm, hence I was pleasantly surprised when I saw them dish out the last few boxes when I went over at almost 1pm. A small pack of 4 pieces comes at the wallet-friendly price of $2.
Finally got down to trying the sinful oyster cake ($2) which made me feel guilty all over. Oyster mixed with mixed meat and chives, then deep fried in a pocket. The resultant 'snack' was an umami, meaty, juicy cake (cough, oil, cough). That said, it's so flavourful, half of it made me satisfied, yet the whole piece just made me feel guilty. Take my advice, share it.
This Vegetarian Mee Jiang Kueh store (opposite the famous SLII muffin shop) carries the most melt-in-the-mouth MJK I've ever had. My teeth sank so quickly into the skin, as if I was standing on quick sand. And I was instantly rewarded with a sweet (and slightly salty) filling. Best way to spend 80c on a weekday!
Happiness after voting comes in the form of this mee jiang kueh. A melt-in-the-mouth, soft, doughy skin enclosing a generous spoonful of coconut shreds. The filling reminds me of the putu mayam sugar, but only better, for it also has the fragrance of coconut in it.
Wet, starchy and eggy Orh Lua was part of the perfect breakfast before we chionged for the Tangs sale. Those who appreciate a starchy Orh Lua would love this, for its starchy insides. The oysters also proved to be fresh and with no smell. This doesn't pale in comparison to those Orh Lua stalls within hawker centers. Definitely something I'd have again!
