Not sure why it too soooo long for Beard Papa to come up with this. This Kaya Cream Puff ($3) is just pure genius. Expect a fragrant pandan flavour infused into the light cream, encased in a crusty puff. Everything about this is LOVE.
It was SO good, we came back twice in a day.
Seriously the best muachee in the whole of Singapore, this store is a 'must visit' whenever I go to Toa Payoh central.
$2.50 for a small portion (pictured), expect to sink you teeth into a chewy firm glutinous dough, generously covered with fine peanut bits that you just can't get enough of!
And the secret to its greatness lies in the yummy shallot oil they dip the muachee in.
Afternoon snacks with @juliuslim the other day at the newly opened 1933, located within Capital Piazza. Another establishment by the Breadtalk Group and let's just say that they've rocked the interior design on this one. Mix between modern and vintage, the store exudes elegance and class. And of course, they have the perfect menu to go with the ambience. Featured here are the viet chicken rolls and summer rolls (I.e.: ngoh hiang) which tasted pretty decent, but not mindblowing. What blew our minds (and tastebuds) were the chilli sauces served alongside both dishes. Both were spicy and balanced, which served as much appreciated complements to the main dishes for spice lovers like us.
A stone's throw away from Bugis Street lies a hidden gem with delightful Chinese treats. Jing Hua is located right next to the famous sister branch of Keisuke Ramen (Bugis). My second time here after many years and I'm glad the food quality has maintained (even though I think the prices have gone up). The Guo Ties here are the star attraction- a crispy thick but light skin wraps around a generous filling of chives and minced pork, these fun-sized dumplings break apart to release all a good amount of porky essence (think XLB soup within the dumpling). 10 bite-sized dumplings for $8 isn't exactly cheap, but definitely worth a visit once in a while.
Ben's Cookies are my mother's favourite cookies (and it's extremely difficult to make it to the top of my mum's food list as she is quite a fussy eater). What sets them apart would definitely be the texture of their cookies. Crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside, having a Ben's Cookie is almost like sinking your teeth into a muffin. The white chip macadamia cookie offers a pretty generous portion of white chocolate and macadamia nuts, ensuring a pleasant surprise with every bite.
Everybody knows tt Green Pumpkin bakery has an awesome selection of artisan Japanese bread. Aside from that, they have a lovely selection of hot sandwiches too. My personal favourite is this Crab Mentaiko sandwich- crab stick slices, fish roe, ham and lettuce warmly wrapped in a toasted flatbread. You can distinctively taste the seafood goodness, complementing the mayonnaise sauce. I personally think it's really worth the $2.80.
Ok it's meh, really. The skin isn't crispy, meat isn't tender and juicy and the sauce is just meh. Really not worth $10.80.
After listening to people rave and rave and rave about this, I finally got down to trying it with my person. And it was sooooo good!!!! Crispy batter, fluffy and not overly cheesy insides, accompanied with the aromatic truffle smell....I'm not a mac&cheese person, but today I'm sold!
I've been having a massive prata craving for weeks so I decided to have these for lunch today. Guess the prata weren't too badly done but lets just say that..... My craving is still not satisfied.
Crispy outside, juicy insides and coated with a sweet & spicy (hence the name swicy) sauce, this whole chicken makes a pretty good lunch. Overheard some customer commenting that the swicy sauce is too sweet and their 'freaking hot' sauce tastes a hell lot better, I guess that will be the next item on my checklist to try here!
Supposedly famous pork chop bun from Macau but it was really just meh. The set comes with sawdust cake (a total waste of calories) and drink. Priced at $6.90/set.
Chunky Steak Pie - Expect to sink your teeth into a buttery fluffy pastry (which turned slightly tough after keeping it for a few hours and reheating) and an explosion of rich gravy and beef chunks. I personally felt that the gravy was slightly too salty. This grouchy face is priced at $5.20.
