Ulu Cafes Easy To Miss
First of, I really loved the atmosphere of the place, it was beautiful and a very good place to chill at. Food was great as well, I had the tuna and my friend had the salmon. Not usually a fan of cucumber but the miso cucumber had me scarfing down every mouthful. Best part is the prices are NETT! Will definitely be back to try the squid and also the matcha :)
First of, I love the decor of the place! It's at the void deck of a HDB but it manages to stand out and has its own sense of class. Now on to the burger. The salted egg yolk burger comes with coleslaw but that's about it, so some might find $12 a bit steep. I do wish they'd have the option of fries for unhealthy people like me, but then again the burger is pretty filling so I don't think I'd have space anyway. The chicken thigh is juicy and crisp, and the sauce is thick and savory, not too sickly sweet, and the ratio of sauce:chicken:burger bun is perfect. I tried the Calrose Rice Bowl with tuna and salmon chunks ($14) but I was severely disappointed. It's a mediocre dish and not worth your stomach space when there are so many other delicious sounding dishes. I'll be back again! Oh yes and the banana Horlicks shake is pretty satisfying.
Before ordering from Deliveroo, I tried doing some research on the place via Burpple/Instagram, but vast majority of the photos were all about their rainbow cakes. I was craving for salted egg so of course I decided on their Shrimp with Salted Egg Pasta ($13.90) while my friend ordered the Beef Lasagne ($9.90). And we decided to wash it all down with Thai Milk Tea ($5). The Thai Milk Tea was acceptable, not too sweet though I do wish it was thicker with more of the tea aroma that we've come to love. The consistency of the salted egg sauce was good and went well with the pasta, not too sweet! Opening the container, you can immediately smell the salted egg aroma.!More chili padi would be good to give the pasta an extra kick though, but overall it's pretty decent. Beef lasagne looked quite small at first but it's actually rather filling, they're generous with the gravy and the layers were not too thick. Might try the paddlepop cheesecake next time, it's too gorgeous not to. #burppleroo #deliveroo
This cafe is easy to walk past, especially when it's along the same stretch as well known Pacamara and Habitat, but we decided to give it a try. Almost got the Salted Egg Pasta, but I decided to give the Chicken Confit a try. It comes with the typical mushroom cream sauce, mesclun salad, and potato wedges. At first I was really happy because there was a satisfying crackling sound when I cut into the skin, however the meat was not as tender as I would like, and it was a bit dry. The steak was quite decent. The oysters were fresh and plump and so worth it! Every Sunday all oysters are $1.50 with the purchase of any main, for the whole day. So if you're making a trip down, Sunday is the best and only day to do it.
Technically not a cafe, but the plating and dishes available give cafes everywhere a run for their money. Add in wallet-friendly prices (think $12.90 NETT for this Best of Both Worlds fish and chips) and you have yourself the perfect recipe. For indecisive greedy people like me who just want to try everything, this is great! It has both their signatures, the Chilli Crab and Salted Egg Yolk Fish, as well as chips and another side of your choice. The batter is perfect, not too oily or floury and the flesh flakes apart at the first cut. As for sauce, I love love love salted egg yolk but this time, the Chilli Crab sauce won my heart. The chips are great too, like the LJS fries of the past that have a crispy edge. My only complaint about this place is the waiting time, it took us 45 minutes from the time we placed our order till we got our food - but it was too good for me to be angry for long. Definitely a must try.
This dish is so sinful but so good i don't care. Kurobuta Pork Confit comes sprinkled with sea salt and a highly addictive mango salsa. The skin is crackling and crisp (I'm salivating just writing about it) and the knife sinks easily into the confit, which is melt in your mouth. And the tastes are all tied in with the mango salsa, which is acidic and sour and somehow works so well with the pork.
Crispy chicken wings dipped in Thai Chilli sauce that has over 9 spices inside, this would be great as beer food. The sauce is so addictive, and the chicken skin is not too floury or soggy from the sauce.
Found my new favourite cafe omg their food was amazing + music and decor was good tooooooo
Found a new favourite cake place! Paddlepop and red velvet cakes were good and reasonably priced. Super moist cakes and the cream wasn't too heavy or fatty tasting. They also have a wide variety of hot teas that go very well with the cakes, and they top up the hot water for you :)
Beef Jowl with garlic confit, this beef was so good that I could polish off all 8 pieces by myself and eat it as a main course. Slightly chewy with perfect ratio of marbling, it went very well with the sharpness of the leaf
These pork ribs were eaten kong ba pao style, and I fell in love. Slow cooked for hours, the meat fell off the bone and was super tender
