Sweet NomNoms
Now that you've had your tummies filled and warmed, hop 10 steps across the lane to 2am Dessert Bar for a sweet treat. As its name suggests, it opens till 2am, allowing you and your friends to chat the night away. The space is nothing like you'd expect for a dessert bar ā its long concrete counters and high chairs provide a dark, cool, industrial vibe. Chef Janice Wong has long been combining unique flavours, and employing interesting techniques to create desserts like we've never seen before. Think tofu parfait, hojicha custard, and pear vodka sorbet lovingly put together in the Hojicha Sesame ($18); or the beautiful Tsujirihei Green Tea Tart ($20) that will have you weak at the knees with its crisp tart shell giving way to an oozing, warm green tea filling, and made complete with a jasmine rice sherbet. Prices aren't cheap, but it is worth the experience, so be sure to share a couple of desserts!
Their [NEW] item released today showcased another trend - Softserve + Mochi Doughnuts.
Twist of Cookie Butter and Honeydew Coconut Softserve with Mochi Doughnut (SGD 10) - Time to get my jawline in shape! The mochi doughnuts were chewy and required a bit of training. I still preferred my single flavour of Honeydew Coconut Softserve to the double flavours. The double twist was sort of twisted for me.
Location: Bali Lane
Opening hours: 12pm - 10pm (Wed-Mon), Closed Tue
Rich creamy soft serve is infused with the warm buttery flavours of Speculoos Cookie Butter, topped with layers of almond crush that gives a crunchy texture to it. You can also taste the distinctive taste of the sea salt that balanced out the sweetness of the soft serve. The owner "Bird" is mentioning about some new interesting flavors that he is still R&D, so do look out for new exciting flavors every month!
Taiwanese ice cream concept Coolplay Soft Serve opens an outlet in Toa Payoh, serving their signature moustached soft serve. Flavours include Heavy Chocolate, Whisky Vanilla, Matcha and Strawberry, with the option to mix two flavours as well. Single flavours cost $4.50 while a dual flavour swirl would cost $5, and you can have your soft serve on either a cup or cone for the same price! Go for the Whisky Vanilla, but take your photo fast ā the ice cream melts really quickly!
This gloriously deconstructed toast was TO DIE FOR (but eat alr will die cos I finished almost everything by myself & it's pretty sweet) - the sourness from yoghurt on the side was a nice touch to balance the sweet toast, I wished there was more yoghurt heh
The waffles are a must try here, I heard, and it is truly good - crispy yet fluffy on the inside. The ice cream which is topped with the salted caramel sauce is sweet just to the right amount.
The froyo craze is making its way back, with newly opened Frozen opening its doors in Toa Payoh, offering a healthier alternative to the usual ice creams and gelatos to quell the heat. Hailing from Melbourne, this yoghurt bar uses biodynamic milk and yoghurt, serving up cool frozen yoghurt flavours including pomegranate, green tea, mango & soy, and coconut. Toppings range from healthy chia seeds, banana bread, goji berries, pomegranate bits, roasted coconut, and loads more!
Have YOU braved the Honey Creme queue? Known for their milky and smooth soft serve ice cream with novel toppings, this Taiwanese brand's soft serve with honeycomb is a popular choice, as is the cotton candy and caramel popcorn. Coffee-lovers can opt for the organic cotton candy affogato and watch a magical display of hot-espresso-on-cotton-candy action unfold. It might be wise to wait till the queues shorten a little, unless you have some time to spare!
Two thumbs up for these fluffy waffles crisped brown on the surfaces, as well as for the ice creams ā the hazelnut, sweet and Kinder Bueno-ish, was a great combination with the slightly sour strawberry cheesecake, smooth and rich with bits of buttery crumble.
Creamier's long queues and licked-dry plates are testament to the truly addictive nature of their ice cream and waffles. Expect to queue even on a weeknight, but it's seriously worth it. Two perfectly crisp waffles stay firm below two scoops of dense ice cream. Go for the Salted Caramel Gula Melaka and the Roasted Pistachio. Photo by Geraldine Tay.
$9.90 for this portion of churros is worth it. But I think they should be more well-known for their chocolate dip rather than the churros. The churros were slightly starchy but I loved that they were extremely crispy and didn't have an oily feeling to it despite being freshly fried. But then again, the last time I ate a good churros were a long long time ago so I had nothing in my memory to compare it with. And again, the crisp sound when I bite into the churros is so memorable that remembering it makes me feel like going back for more. There are three dips: milk, white and dark. It was difficult to choose my favourite as all three are finger-licking good. It took me so much to resist the temptation of licking the container clean. My only gripe was that the dark chocolate could be more bitter. Service wise, they could do with improvements to the number system. I had to be super alert because I was afraid that I would miss the staff calling out my number. This is worth a try, especially for chocolate lovers.
A delightful Japanese sundae with all the requisites. I opted for the vanilla flavour as I'd also ordered a matcha roll cake, and was very happy with it š Will be returning to try their other items for sure. Nothing like a pleasant experience to motivate more visits.
