All Burpplers Need To Try
If there is one thing I don't mind eating every other day, it will definitely be congee. And even more so when the congee's from Mui Kee.
-
Mui Kee — a popular Cantonese congee stall from Hong Kong — has partnered with Les Amis Group to open a 6-month long pop up at Casa Verde.
-
There are 8 different types of congee to choose from, priced between $12.50 to $14.50 per set. Each set comes with a side of fried dough fritters and century egg.
-
Smooth and silky congee that glides down your throat effortlessly. I'm sold. If I have to pick a favourite, it will be the Fish Belly Congee ($14.50). Was blown by the #wokhei infused congee! The fish belly slices are first sautéed with rice wine before adding them to the congee, thus infusing the congee with that complex smoky flavour and aroma. So so so good!! The fish belly congee is one of the popular items on the menu and sells out fast. Better head down early to secure your bowl of fish belly congee.
-
PS: The pop-up menu will be available till end of 2017, every Tuesday to Sunday, 7:30am to 3pm.
Brunch with momma earlier. Since we are around the area, I suggested trying the claypot mee tai mak that has been making its rounds on social media. Best decision ever.
Wriggly, soft but firm silver needle noodle in viscous, umami-filled gravy. The raw egg add richness, flavour & serves as a thickening agent; adding body to the gravy. The prawns, minced meat & vegetables add texture and crunch to the noodles. My kind of comfort food and I can see myself coming back for more. #IFindComfortHere
Comes in 3 sizes ($5/$8/$10). We ordered $8 and is just nice for 2 pax.
PS: I would recommend to eat the mee tai mak as soon as it's served as the gravy dries up fast. Do note that they are closed from 2pm to 5pm daily. (Opening Hours: 11am - 2pm, 5pm - 10:45pm).
↬ Linguine Alla Vongole: Linguine with clams in white wine sauce. Generous portion of al dente linguine with 8 juicy, plump clams. Can't really taste the white wine thou'~ Well, can't complain for the price! (Staff Price: $3.80, Public: $4.20)
↬ Calamari - Tender pieces of squid in light, crispy batter. Served with curry leaves & mayonnaise. This was so good! (Staff Price: $3, Public: $4)
Washed down with a cup of coconut water. All for $7.60! #valueformoney
小碗面 - Al-dente mee kia (thin noodles) with special sauce, extra chilli, flavourful stewed sliced mushrooms & crispy pork lard. Comes with a big bowl of soup full of ingredients! Minced pork, pork slices, pork liver, fish cake, hee giao (fish dumpling) & egg in rich pork broth. My all-time favourite bak chor mee as the noodles don't have the "kee" (alkali) smell & I love the soup so much I just have to finish it up everytime I visit!
Am a fan of this stall although the price keep increasing over the years. hahaha! It's S$6 now but it's worth every penny! Have brought many people to try & everyone loves it. That says alot, eh?
PS: Be prepared to wait about 40 mins to an hour after ordering. Good things are worth the wait! Please go early as they close around 2-2:30pm or even earlier! Opens daily from 6:30am - 2:30pm (or earlier) except 初一十五 (1st & 15th of the lunar calendar).
Not really a fan of char siew because the ones that I have tried are either too sweet or dry. Well, this plate of char siew + roast pork just changed my mind.
The char siew slightly charred, caramelized exterior is not cloying sweet, meat's tender & flavorful with layers of fat & meat. I must say that it's the best char siew I have eaten. So good that I bought some home for the parents!
Ask for lean meat if you are not a fan of fats. But trust me, char siew with a layer of fat tastes much better!
The best part about roast pork is the crackling! Pork belly with slight hint of five spice & crispy skin, anyone?
Do visit Yee Kee for some mind blowing char siew! Totally worth the calories & the trip down!
PS: Uncle is very cute, friendly & generous! A very nice & humble elderly couple who makes good char siew, roast pork & roast duck!
Fuzhou Oyster Cake (福州蠔餅). I love this! Used to buy from the stall at Bugis Village when they were still selling 1 for S$1.50. (The last I ate, it's S$2.50). When I saw it yesterday at Maxwell, I knew I have to get it! Maxwell's version is S$2 for 1 but it's worth every penny and calorie! Oyster, prawns, minced pork & chives encased in a thin batter that is crispy on the outside, moist and soft bursting with flavours inside. A must try @ Maxwell Food Centre! I prefer this to the one at Bugis Village! (Maxwell Fuzhou Oyster Cake/洪家福州蠔餅, Maxwell Food Centre, Stall 5, #01-05, close on Sundays).
Claypot rice cooked in an earthen pot, with ingredients including chicken, chinese sausages (lup cheong), waxed pork and bits of salted fish. The rice has characteristics of a good claypot rice -an aromatic, smoky flavour and crispy rice crusts at the bottom of the pot. Best to call before heading down as the waiting time for the claypot rice is 25 mins. We called & was served within 10-15mins.
