I have seen several postings on burpple about this humble soup and steamed rice stall that prides itself in using premium ingredients .
It’s not ye easiest to find and I had hope that they would have a better location so that more people can benefit from their nourishing soups.
I had the melon and barley chicken soup and it was indeed nourishing and not overly seasoned.
Their house special is the chicken soup broiled in a whole coconut husk but that was sold out .
My partner had the lotus root with lean pork and peanuts and I must say that I was very impressed to see no fat or oil residue floating atop the soup surface since most stalls use pork ribs which tend to be quite fatty - this tells me that they make an effort to Blanche the pork before cooking the soup.
Novelty, I guess. The fruit obviously imparts its distinctive sweetness to the soup and you can tell it takes hours, but it's not spectacular given it's pricier.
Having boiled soup for lunch today due to strong cravings from the rainy weather these past few days. The soup had a nice mixture of sweet coconut & herbal taste, which i paired with organic rice. Overall, a yummy & healthy combination! 😋
This is definitely no doubt THE chicken soup for the soul. Served in a whole old coconut (definitely insta-worthy), this hearty home-made soup is clear sweet (清甜), refreshing and nourishing. The sweetness of the soup comes from the herbs and chicken used to boil the soup. The chicken is so tender that it falls apart when you pick it up with your chopsticks. With an additonal $1 top up, I opted for the three coloured organic rice (a mixture of brown, red and black) with super crispy white bait fish and vegetable to go with the soup.
Run by proprietors Chong Chee Siang and Eric Lim, this stall in Bukit Merah Central's Dong Fong Fatt Coffeeshop is the place to go for soul-warming double-boiled soups. Chee Siang, who runs the show, got the recipes from a Hong Kong chef he used to work with. We applaud their commitment to not adding MSG or using pre-made stocks — you'll be slurping down only the tasty, wholesome and nutritious. There is a good range of familiar favourites like lotus root soup and ABC soup, but it is the Double Boiled Old Coconut Chicken Soup ($8) that is worth making the trip for. Tastemaker Vanessa Kou describes it to be a "clear, refreshing and subtly sweet broth" that is steamed and served in a whole old coconut. It's even won over Tastemaker Xing Wei Chua, who admits he's not much of a soup drinker. He likes the refreshing sweetness that comes from the herbs, but also appreciates that it is not overly herbal. The chicken is fall-off-the-bone tender, and he was particular impressed by crispy dried whitebait that tops the accompanying white rice ($0.50). Three-colour organic (brown, red and black) or minced mushroom shrimp rice options are also available (both $1). Pro tip: Soups sell out pretty quickly in the evenings, so consider calling to reserve the soups you want a day or two ahead.
Avg Price: $10 per person

Fans of double-boiled soups will agree that it is truly an art form to have the flavour of the ingredients extracted out without overcooking them. Hence, many out there tend to be mildly thirst-inducing (god forbid, MSG) but the ones at Lim’s, located at Bukit Merah Central, are certainly different.
A clear, refreshing and subtly sweet broth, their Signature Old Coconut Chicken Soup was definitely worth the travel down. And used in its entirety, the soup is steamed in a whole coconut and presented in the husk so be sure to give it a good mix before consumption. Taking the goodness of chicken soup to a new level, the classic savouriness is enhanced as well as balanced out with the sweetness and light nuttiness of the coconut. Brimming with flavour in each spoonful; the warm, comforting and nourishing soup also has the heady aroma of herbs though thankfully not too overwhelming as you can still taste each ingredient. Very clean and gentle on the palate. The perfect add-on to the harmonious blend would be a bowl of steamed rice and theirs comes with a small handful of crispy silverfish which provides a simple seasoning as well as crunch. Substantial, wholesome and healthy!
So good, they too have an array of other solid, quality soups all priced reasonably. Thus, would recommend placing reservations a day or two beforehand as they sell out pretty quickly in the evenings.
