The freshness will come through in your taste buds, give it a try!

medium is perfect ! 100 gram for $48 , pricy yet still worth trying, super tender inside and a tad crispy outside. Black pepper sauce gives it an extra kick!

Rich taste, very complete taste with complexity not often tasted in Japanese ramen.

The soba here is memorable! It's got a good bite and you can taste that it's handmade! The kakiage is average, nothing spectacular though.

Don’t get this thinking you will have plenty of crab meat to munch on because you will be disappointed. Instead, get this for the potent sweetness of the broth. I liked it so much that when the spoon had done all it could, I held the bowl up to my face to get at every drop.

Amongst the dishes we ordered, this was the one I found tastiest.
The pork belly was tender, juicy and very flavourful having been marinated in miso and expertly grilled. I quickly realised I wasn’t the only one who was besotted. In fact, the decision to order a second plate was swift and unanimous.

Piping hot milk omelette with fromage cheese! A must-try when there for it is something not served in most restaurants in Singapore. Reminds me of good old Hokkaiddo, which I’m sorry for flipping upside down. 😅

Mmm that fragrant and juicy pork belly with the right distribution of “collagen” and meat. 😍

Never have i had such delicious ramen - so silky and smooth. Coupled with sesame base sauce with a light touch of chilli oil, the dish came with crispy fragrant chicken katsu and is refreshing in its own right.

Beef most excellent! Found this hole-in-the-wall izakaya at Tanjong Pagar this week, and boy it brought me back to Japan. Chatter from the tables in the back, Chefs crammed cheerfully behind the counter, one grilling by the window, the delicious smells wafting over us. There was a sense of cosiness and familiarity here, mirrored in the lone warrior next to us - legs splayed open, sipping his sake and dining on thick slices of sashimi as he tugged his t-shirt over this belly. A thick finger gesticulating wildly for another bottle of sake to the chuckles of the staff who pat him on the back. It wasn't just the ambience though! The food brought to mind the verdant hills of Hakone - simple unassuming fare that didn't rely on gimmicks, just the freshest ingredients. It was Wagyu Week at the restaurant and they had a slew of beefy options. Look at the meats we ordered! The marbling! The sear around the edges! We dipped each slice into their homemade ponzu sauce, a citrusy tang that cut through the richness of the beef. Each slice of meat was soft and delicate, it's hard to describe its perfection. Also, the whole place was ridiculously affordable, $23 for the beef and $12 for bara chirashi don. Anyway, please don't visit. I don't want to have to queue for it. hahaha

To be honest, the photo on the menu was appealing but the delivered dish was like a meh. But still this is a good side dish if you are into sweet onions. The onions were a little hard to picked up but the taste was as mildly sweet as I have anticipated. The miserable amount of dengaku miso was probably the only true negative I can think of. With such ample amount sauce as shown on the menu, it just disappoints me a little that it could have been done better.

Nabe hotpots are commonly found in cold regions such as Hokkaido, naturally this izakaya have a couple of Hokkaido exclusive recipes of nabes. I love the creamy texture of the miso milk soup that's boiling hot from the fuel piece below the bowl. Even gf who doesn't like creamy stuff had to agree that a pipping hot soup like this is nice to indulge in. Having this dish really brings back the winter mood, like putting a hot piece of meat or cabbage into your mouth and puffing out the heat. 🤤

One of the dishes that caught gf's eye again. While hot soba is slowly picking up in singapore, places that sells them have to be really good to set a standard among singaporeans and this is probably one of those places. Their Buckwheat soba made fresh daily, the soba was silky and soft when served. The enormous piece of kakiage was left hanging there covering a third of the bowl. The waiter serving the dish told us to break half and soak one in the soyu broth. I find myself extremely tempted to just dunk all of it into the soup, which I did in the end. Well about 90% of the crispy kakiage anyway. 😛 It's quite value for money as well at around $12, so it's pretty safe on the wallet if you are craving for something delicious and comforting to your stomach.

soba hasn't really properly taken hold of Singaporeans yet - we are properly enamoured by ramen. but the soba at hokkaido izakaya is a worthy (and probably healthier) alternative.
break the kakiage (that's the crispy-looking cracker balancing on top of the bowl) into pieces, dunk it into the bowl and slurp everything up like the world is going to end. it is simultaneously salty, crispy and slightly sweet all in one. the soba is slightly softer than most ramen noodles but that provides a good contrast to the crispy kakiage.
must add, too, service is top notch here. the servers really do know what's good on the menu, and they are always ready to give advice about how to best eat the various dishes.

It was a quiet Tuesday night but we decided to splurge. We were served in sequence: grilled surf clam ($11), aburi salmon roll ($19), snow crab croquette ($15), 1/2 dozen fresh Hokkaido oysters ($48), and the Kakiage Soba ($14)... we spent $109++ in a night! Weird sequence, but tell you what, just trust the chef! It was a gastronomical experience! Coming into the restaurant, absorbing the small space, smell from the grills, it feels like I am in Japan! The waiter and waitress are both very friendly and polite, providing a cosy feel. Would definitely be back here for more grilled items! #burpplesushimonth

Substantial and pretty economical, Hokkaido Izakaya’s compact lunch menu offers up a comforting selection of buckwheat noodles with FREE flow of onsen eggs, fried tempura batter and seaweed. Furthermore, you can upsize your soba with a choice of 100g, 200g, or 300g at no additional cost. Such a great deal! Having tried the Kakiage Tempura Soba (S$12) and Wagyu Beef Shabu Shabu Soba ($15), my favourite would definitely be the latter as the former does get a bit gelak after awhile.

Both set also came with onigiri which was a bit of an overkill on carbs but I managed to finish mine after soaking it in the broth. The generous slab of crisp mixed vegetables tempura perched on the bowl adds a nice texture though it does little to enhance the flavours to the dish whereas the thinly sliced beef complemented the warm savoury-sweet broth. The noodles of course, were pretty well done as well. Decent lunch option to satisfy any soba craving - TBH, they got me at free-flow soft boil eggs as each was perfectly done and super shiok when slurping with the soba.

[A word of advice would be to stick to 100g first so as to avoid a food induced coma, as tested by my lunch companions.]

Nomz, just wish I had a bigger portion of the wagyu beef. Left wanting more..
Comes with Onigiri and part of the lunch menu

Hokkaido Izakaya highlight is actually you can get to upsize your soba for free! With the selection of 100g, 200g or 300g. Furthermore, they served free flow of Onsen Tamago too! This is a great for carbs and protein builder out there!

Do be mindful that you do need to wait awhile before your meal is served as the buckwheat soba is freshly made after you order.

Do heed the advise of the staffs, I tried attempting 300g and I was Soo bloated. The texture of the soba was ok, as it did not have the al dente texture but still have the slurping shiokness. As for the beef slices, it has a chewy texture and mixing with the Onsen, it gave a hint of sweetness and savoury taste.

Overall, it was a simple and decent bowl of soba. Oh! You can add some tempura bits if you prefer to have something to munch on. Do take note Hokkaido Izakaya lunch menu has a limited selection, but their dinner has a much larger variety.

Almost meaty (?!) and succulent, grilled very well. There is beauty in simplicity when it comes to vegetables
