Tucked in Sunway Geo Avenue's Jaya Grocer is this quaint cafe serving Malaysian and Japanese-inspired rice bowls that's sure to keep your belly happy. Swing by for a quick solo lunch and order the popular Sambal Oelek Fried Rice (RM11.90) – spoon slowly as the housemade sambal is fiery! Burppler Jesuis Enamourez recommends throwing in proteins like the Sesame Chicken Meatballs (RM6.50) or Fried Chicken Karaage (RM8.50) to make your meal more substantial. Equally satisfying is the Fattie Bom Bom (RM18.90) with crunchy chicken karaage, mushrooms, onsen egg doused in their dynamite ebiko sauce.

I really enjoyed this – spicy but not too much, and it’s just so Malaysian. The rice is fried in a housemade salty-spicy sambal, topped with a fried egg and ikan bilis, kinda like nasi lemak but not really. As much as I enjoyed it, it got a bit too rich for me (like the previous bowl) and I had to give up. I think some fresh cucumbers would be a nice accompaniment!
Super savoury rice bowl with chicken karaage, sautéed mushrooms, gorgeous egg that’s all drizzled in a spicy ebiko sauce. It’s great to eat after you’ve had a long night out and you need something hearty. I wish it had something acidic in the bowl to help cut the richness as it got a bit overwhelming halfway through.
Looking for something quick for lunch? This decent bowl of fried rice will give you that spicy kick yet filling. Japanese rice fried with Chef’s special Indo Sambal Oelek topped with sunny side up, scallions and fried anchovies. You can also add on crispy turkey ham, sesame chicken meatballs and fried chicken karaage at a charge. RM13.90 per serving.
Simple bowl of salmon donburi on rainy days and theirs are surprisingly good for the price paid. Warm japanese grains with good amount of teriyaki sauce, seared salmon with torch ebiko sauce, shredded nori, onsen egg and slices of cucumber. RM21.90 per serving.
I’m into rice bowls lately, and Food by Fat Cat is a godsend for rice bowls. I’ve only tried their Fattie Bom Bom so far, and it’s not bad! Would like to try their other ones if I visit again. A Fattie Bom Bom is priced at RM20.
