Wagyu Beef Rump Cap Don

For $17.10, this is a very well executed donburi!! My bf and I love wagyu don and we frequent this place with the initials TR. But I donโ€™t think we will be going back there any more because we have found a better place ๐Ÿคฉ The serving was generous, and the mixture of onsen egg and furikake made the rice so tasty we gobbled it up!! The truffle scent might be a little underwhelming, but itโ€™s still acceptable! 9/10!

From the outside, The Bedok Marketplace looks like your regular HDB hawker centre which is shaped like a UFO. What's interesting is that instead of the usual lanes of food stalls which you usually see, the stalls are housed on the ground floor of pre-war 2-storey shophouses.

@theburningoaksg is one of the anchor tenants there and is famous for its wagyu dons. For $23.50, you get sliced wagyu rump cap, a piece of foie gras, pickled radish and ginger, and an onsen egg on top of Japonica rice.

The beef rump cap is an under-used and less pricey cut of meat. It is juicy as there is a layer of fats which flavours and locks in the moisture of the meat whilst it cooks. It is also one of the cuts with a stronger beefy flavour. The downside is that it tends to be tougher and more chewy than the more premium cuts.

The Burning Oak's rump cap was a little tough. I like that they sliced it thinly so that it is relatively easier to chew but not shabu shabu-thin that you barely get a taste of the meat. It was also marinated nicely though I would have preferred that they did not use a marinade or a lighter tasting marinade to allow the beefy flavours of the rump cap to shine through.

Overall, this is a decent gyudon which I might come back for if I am in the area.

Truffle wagyu don ($16)
โญ๏ธ 4/5 โญ๏ธ
๐ŸดSo many modern/ fusion options at the hip @thebedokmarketplace that we were spoilt for choice and definitely planning on a return trip.

Enjoyable wagyu don that came with a generous serving of minced beef and thin wagyu beef slices at this price point. Loved the slight char yet tender minced wagyu that had distinct but not overpowering truffle aroma. Although retaining a pink interior, would have liked for the lean rump slices to be juicier. Given their name, also felt that the slices could do with more sear and smokiness. The onsen egg added glorious creaminess while the wasabi was a great earthy, spicy balance (wished there was more of it!).

Travelled to the East for the ๐™’๐™–๐™œ๐™ฎ๐™ช ๐™–๐™ฃ๐™™ ๐™๐™ง๐™ช๐™›๐™›๐™ก๐™š ๐™ข๐™ž๐™ฃ๐™˜๐™š (~$16), topped with a flowy onsen egg ๐Ÿณ Surprisingly, the truffle scent and taste was strong, and I found myself liking the mince. The Wagyu beef was generous in portion though slightly too dry for my liking โ€” nonetheless this was a steal at the price.

My go to when I feel like having cheap and good Wagyu Don!

Juicy slices of Wagyu beef that were so soft and not having a single trace of tendon. Minced Wagyu was equally flavourful and well marinated! Mixed in the onsen egg, there you have a hearty bowl of goodness. This is worth every penny. ๐Ÿ˜

This did not disappoint at all! Was more impressed by the pork cheeks than the wagyu beef, it was perfection๐Ÿ˜!! Though i have to say i preferred the rice in the wagyu bowl due to the combination of the truffle minced beef and onsen egg with rice. Apart from Grilllo at Suntec, this shop is comparable in terms of price and taste when it comes to jap donburis! 8.5/10๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

First impression: I think I will like the sliced beef more
First sense: The truffle smell is so strong and alluring ๐Ÿ˜

Verdict: Loved the truffle minced beef much more than the wagyu beef slices not just because of the strong truffle flavour, but also because the latter fell short of expectations when it's said to have a marbling score of 4/5 - it wasn't as juicy nor fatty as expected, but still tender! The onsen egg really helped in binding the ingredients together as you mix it all up, and gave each mouthful a creamy consistency which leaves you wanting more ๐Ÿคค So good.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Too sinewy, I almost preferred the cheap beef mince (which just so you know, actually makes up half the meat portion).

Back for the extremely affordable wagyu beef rump cap steak ($13) and I was still impressed with its smokiness, flavour and marbling (the bits of crispy juicy fat that burst in the mouth were so sinful but delightful)!!!!
