The area around Fengshan Market & Food Centre was at some point a spot that was a little connected to the local cafe-hopping scene some time back when cafes had just started to sprout up across several areas in the heartlands — the estate still sees names such as Milk & Honey Gelato still hanging on strong these days, but names like the now-defunct i Scream and To-gather Cafe had been long forgotten by now. A new name has appeared in the neighbourhood yet again; Daily Mujo 日常咖啡 is a new addition to the area, taking over the space of the now-defunct Power Coffeehouse which seem to have left the local F&B scene quietly. Daily Mujo takes on a rather different look as compared to Power Coffeehouse; the vibrant and colourful space that somewhat resembles a modern-style coffeeshop has since been revamped — Daily Mujo’s interior design language is more tuned towards a Japandi style where the space sees the use of stone-esque flooring matched with cement walls and wooden furnishings. This creates a clean look with a zen touch, especially considering that there is use of plants to spruce up the space while at it. Looking at the menu, all does start to come up a little familiar — while the menu is split across various sections such as Fresh Croissants, Country Sourdough Toast, Sides & Sharing, Pasta, Daily Mujo Specialty, Mains and Desserts ,one thing might seem rather the stark for those whom had previously been to both the now-defunct To-gather Cafe and Power Coffeehouse; there are items on the menu that is familiar to the menu that To-gather Cafe used to serve, and there are also some dishes that does seem to suggest that there might be a relationship with Power Coffeehouse somewhere as well. Beverages available at Daily Mujo includes a Local Series featuring Hainanese-style Kopi & Teh with their own modern twist, espresso-based specialty coffee and filter coffee brewed using beans roasted by PPP Coffee, Tea Latte, Artisanal Tea and Special Iced beverages.

For those whom have been following us for quite a while since the early days of both the blog at jiaksimipng and this Instagram account here, the mention of a Pandan Chicken Chop might ring some bells. In fact, the Pandan Chicken Chop is one of those items that have been very much an icon for To-gather Cafe back then — something which we recalled to be rather unique back in its day, with the execution and plating being still quite rare in this day. Daily Mujo describes on the menu that their Pandan Chicken Chop consists of elements such as pandan-infused chicken with coconut sauce, fresh pineapple salsa, fries and coleslaw. As the dish arrives the table, the plating does indeed scream “To-gather Cafe” from how it looks — in fact, the way the elements are plated and presented is rather close to that of what we have had a number of years ago at To-gather Cafe. Digging into the Pandan Chicken Chop, we did feel that Daily Mujo has refined the dish further from what it was — the chicken chop feels tender and juicy; the slab of chicken beautifully charred and does carry a slight whiff of fragrance almost typical of satay in some parts where despite lacking the turmeric, does come with a very slight hint of smokiness as well. This works well with the coconut cream that gives it a rich fragrance that brought up the notes of the pandan by a light touch; the fresh pineapple salsa that came with diced pineapples, onions and capsicums providing a refreshing zing and a slight tang that cuts through the notes of the meat and the coconut cream to keep things light — also made us yearn for more since it made the dish surprisingly easy to eat. The thick-cut fries here were crisp; flavourful without being over-seasoned with salt — all that without being greasy as well.

Meanwhile, the coleslaw was an interesting touch where the julienned cabbage does seem to be done in a way close to how sauerkraut is; whilst the coleslaw comes with a milky note and without any distinct tanginess that would be expected out of a typical sauerkraut, the coleslaw that deliver a refreshing crunch and didn’t feel particularly jelak — also came at an appropriate temperature being chilled before ending up on the plate here. During our visit, we had also given the Spicy Nasi Goreng with Chicken and the Classic Fish ‘N’ Chips a go as well — the former being a slightly different take on the Power Nasi Goreng that Power Coffeehouse had previously offered. Still coming with the 63°C sous vide egg (though albeit strangely without the egg yolk; not really sure if the egg yolk was separated out to be wok-fried together with the fried rice); the Spicy Nasi Goreng with Chicken does carry the spicy kick that its namesake promised and the savoury note that one would expect out of a fried rice dish. That being said, the dish does lack the slight greasiness that would give it that sheen of a good fried rice dish. That itself could be help slightly with the inclusion of the egg white from the 63°C sous vide egg ; the shreds of chicken also bring a little bit on the drier side — we also felt that the Ikan Bilis felt a little limp and did not really help with the overall textures of the dish either. When it came to the Classic Fish ‘N’ Chips, the deep-fried fish fillet came in a panko crumb batter that was largely crisp though a little more crunchier around the edges — some might find this a little hard to chew through but it wasn’t too bothersome for us. Otherwise the fish does seem to be fresh, and does not come with any distinct muddy / fishy notes — the fish being smooth and flaky whilst locking sufficient moisture within and wasn’t greasy either.

The Kopi Latte itself is being listed on the Local Series section of the beverages menu; also something that was previously offered in the menu at Power Coffeehouse — this can be said as a fusion of a espresso-based Latte and the Hainanese-style Kopi where the Latte is done in a way that is slightly frothy and comes with sweetness of condensed milk. Overall, Daily Mujo does seem to be that establishment that both now-defunct Power Coffeehouse and To-gather Cafe were; the sort of place serving hearty and familiar dishes with fusion elements that are close to the heart — while the experiences at Daily Mujo, Power Coffeehouse, To-gather Cafe have never been greatly gastronomical and sometimes to have some room for improvement, they do offer an interesting look into how some dishes can potentially become with a bit of a twist. With its items listed on the Pasta, Daily Mujo and Mains sections of the menu being priced below $18, Daily Mujo does seem to keep prices competitive to benefit its patrons — their fare being a little more accessible to that of most cafes these days that tend to have prices for main dishes start past $20 instead. A spot that is in the neighbourhood and for the neighbourhood, Daily Mujo does seem like quite the all-familiar location that Fengshan residents have all these while — an amalgamation of both Power Coffeehouse and To-gather Cafe that looks towards feeding the same neighbourhood well as they move along as Daily Mujo in this part of their journey in the local F&B scene
