It seems that there has been a trend of Chinese-style dessert shops openings all across the island in recent times — whilst Serangoon Gardens already has Dessert Bowl 一碗甜品 that had been operating within the neighbourhood for quite a while, there has been a recent addition of yet another local Chinese-style dessert shops that had sprouted up in the neighbourhood recently. Located at 66A Serangoon Gardens Way, Chun Chun Tian Mi 唇唇甜密 takes over the former premises of the now-defunct outlet of The Larder Cafe that is located at Serangoon Gardens. Chun Chun Tian Mi is relatively easy to find — the space that it occupies is located just across the bus stop of Serangoon Garden Circus; one can find the signage for the shop hanging out from the top of the shophouse unit that they are situated at. To enter Chun Chun Tian Mi, one would have to access the shop via the glass door located right beside the outlet of Guardian there at the ground level — patrons would need to climb up the flight of stairs which would directly lead into the dining area of Chun Chun Tian Mi. The way that Chun Chun Tian Mi is being decked is pretty simple and free from unnecessary distractions — the large use of white walls, grey vinyl floorings and metallic furniture does somewhat reminded us of Yat Ka Yan Dessert’s outlet at Tan Quee Lan Street. Being a shop that serves up local-style Chinese desserts, the food menu at Chun Chun Tian Mi is split into several categories which includes Hot Desserts, Cold Desserts, and Snacks. Beverages available at Chun Chun Tian Mi would include a very limited selection of canned drinks and bottled water.
The mention of avocado with sago does somewhat remind us a little bit of what Yat Ka Yan Dessert has to offer, though it does seem that the folks behind Chun Chun Tian Mi had went a little further than that — apart from the Avocado Sago, one can also find items like the Avocado Chempedak Sago and the Durian Avocado Sago on the menu at Chun Chun Tian Mi as well. While the menu of Chun Chun Tian Mi does not describe on the elements that comes accompanied with their various dishes, it can be observed from our order that the Avocado Chempedak Sago comprises of elements such as avocado mousse, chempedak mousse, vanilla ice-cream, shaved ice, mini taro q balls, and grass jelly. Thought that the consistency of the shaved ice here was well-managed considering how the shaved ice was pretty fine with an even texture throughout the entire bowl; this made it a joy to be had with all the elements that it came with. The Chempedak mousse really carried a sweetness that one would associate with the jackfruits, while buttery notes of avocado from the avocado mousse seems to have provided a balance of flavours and given the dessert a richer flavour. The scoop of vanilla ice-cream is the one element that attempts to bind everything together with its creamy texture, while the mini taro q balls provided a good bouncy chew that adds a further contrast of textures to the dessert.
We had also managed to try the Pumpkin Sago with Tangyuan from the “Hot Desserts” section of the menu — we were pleasant surprised that the Pumpkin Sago here isn’t quite as sweet as what one would expect; definitely more well managed than some of the Cream of Pumpkin soups out there. Coming with sago, the sago provided an element of chew while the Tangyuan comes with black sesame filling — gives the dessert yet another dimension of chew. Having only tried two (2) items from their menu during our visit to Chun Chun Tian Mi, we must say that we were actually pretty impressed with what these folks have to offer — the Avocado Chempedak Sago definitely being one of the dishes that we would find ourselves returning for considering the quality of which it is being served at. Prices of the various dessert items are priced between $5 to $9; the priciest items on the menu being the Avocado Chempedak Sago that we had went for, as well as the Durian Avocado Sago. Chun Chun Tian Mi is likely one the spots that we would probably find ourselves returning to if looking for a dessert spot to stop by within the Serangoon Gardens neighbourhood — definitely wanting to give their other items like the Chendol and their Crispy Cereal Fried a go some other time!
