Hungry at midnight and nowhere to go? Nasi lemak ayam goreng is the answer for a good wholesome meal. Rice portion is kinda small but then again, how much can you eat for supper anyway? Sambal is just right, not too spicy and not too sweet.

Open till 4am, streetside Bumbung makes a popular spot in PJ for night owls, students and the after-work crowd. The Nasi Lemak with Fried Chicken (RM6) topped with a perfect fried egg never ceases to satisfy those late night cravings that have been driving you up the 'bumbung'. Expect speedy service that will bring your nasi lemak from counter to table in no time.

Finally, I've catched up with the nasi lemak craze before 2017 ends. Had my nasi lemak fix at Nasi Lemak Bumbung after months of "we should go there and give it a try". Too bad it was raining that day, otherwise we can dine under the stars between the back lane of shoplots near the errr "bushes?".
Ordered their nasi lemak ayam, Indomee ayam (both with telur mata of course), chicken chop and 2 limau ice (total damage is around RM 26. I'm not sure as I got someone to belanja me today. πŸ˜…πŸ˜…πŸ˜…). The ayam was full of spices and taste on the peppery side but in a good way.
While you can see they fry loads (and I mean LOADS) of chicken almost non stop. Yet. Their ayam is still very juicy and tender and and that come from a chicken breast unlike the tree bark thing that we get from some restaurants (you know who you are).
Overall, this is my kind of place to come to makan. I mean, c'mon, how many more places you can get comfort food under the stars nowadays.

When it comes to a remarkable rendition of our national dish in the late of night, the mind doesn't stray far from Bumbung. After a few drinks with your friends, stop by this bustling backalley for a supreme nasi lemak supper. The must-order Nasi Lemak Ayam (RM6) will see a sloppy miscellany of coconut milk-steeped rice, spice-fried chicken and a mandatory telur mata. The sweet, runny sambal makes a prized commodity on this plate, supplying umami where it goes. The dish will not look very refined, but at that hour, we couldn't care less about looks and neither will you once you tuck into it. For the noodle-inclined, get the simple Indo Mee (RM2.50) with a wobbly fried egg on top. Expect to pay pocket-friendly prices too!

A late night favourite when back in my city. The long rows of tables that line the back alley in Sea Park speaks for itself. Operating out of a single storage unit, Bumbung (literally meaning 'roof') takes over the zinc-roofed side of a coffee shop that closes at night.

The spices of the ayam goreng rempah are super fragrant (though not as crispy as I'd like it to be) and very delicious. The rice is decently fluffy but with not quite enough coconut milk to make it super fragrant. Sambal has decent kick and loads of onions. The whole thing is topped with a telur mata kerbau (direct tr: egg-eye-bull) 🀀🍳

I've been frequenting this place for as long as I can remember and it still baffles me that this only costs RM5. Madness.

Tip: Ask for extra sambal.

Bumbung's Maggi goreng is like no other. Without the chicken (a possible addition) the instant noodles are only fried with a few cubes of tofu, a few bean sprouts... BUT, that first hit of curry umami-ness (from the soup base) combined with the severe wok hei. SHIOK. 🀀 Also, protect your perfectly fried sunny side up egg yolk from evil friends (armed with forks) at all cost.
