Favourite version of nasi lemak is definitely the humble breakfast packet that sees just the mainstay coconut rice with sambal, egg, ikan bilis and peanuts. This one’s really delicious! Rice is redolent of fragrant santan, topped with that sweet and spicy sambal for a good morning kick.
Formerly located in Section 19, Appu Uncle Curry House may already be a familiar name for their fragrant curries, but what we also enjoy about this curry house is the quirky branding — the restaurant's decked out in humorous illustrations to look out for. Come in the mornings to snag a packet of Nasib Lemak (RM1.80), which comes with a note of (often funny) advice from Uncle Appu. For lunch and dinner, it’s all about satisfying Banana Leaf Rice (from RM6), best had with the freshly fried Ikan Tenggiri (RM7.50) and savoury Mutton Curry (from RM7).
Gotta love the sense of humour at this Indian joint – who else would think of putting a note of advice in their nasi lemak packets? On the food, the sambal is super spicy so eat with caution! On the notes, some don’t really make sense but that’s the best part lol.
I’m a big fan of Appu’s not just for the convenience, but also for the affordable prices and the yum grub. Curries here, while still flavourful, aren’t as spicy as other spots, so it’s perfect for me. Love the garlic pickle I got on this visit! Super garlicky and a little sour.
Section 19’s popular banana leaf rice spot has moved to a cosy, pastel-coloured shop in Damansara Jaya. Service is quick and friendly, the banana leaf rice is a steal (only RM6) and the onion chutney is just heavenly. Marking this as my go-to spot whenever I’m craving Indian grub.
