The Matcha Latte was slightly underwhelming; the milkiness and creaminess were subtle, but the matcha flavour was present, which redeemed it somewhat.
Dessert and Drink Set (¥1010)
This set offers great value. I chose the Kamakura Honey Pudding (¥710) and the Matcha Latte (¥660). The pudding, made with Kamakura honey sourced from Kenchoji Temple's domestic bee farm, had a pure, natural sweetness. The custard pudding was silky, smooth, and wobbly, pairing perfectly with the honey. I appreciated how the sweetness was natural and not overwhelming. Additionally, the tray featured adorable dusted art to add mood.

This dessert was inspired by their moss garden (see last pic) and beautifully reflected Kamakura’s lush greenery. Served in a wooden box, it consisted of sponge cake and matcha pudding, topped with vanilla ice cream and generously dusted with matcha powder to resemble their moss garden. The vibrant green was visually striking. The matcha had a moderate bitterness without being overpowering, and the powder was smooth, avoiding any unpleasant choking sensation. The sponge cake was light and airy, while the matcha pudding was smooth and pleasant. A perfect treat for matcha enthusiasts.
Then, after having Nagashi Somen for lunch, I walked along the path from Kita-Kamakura to Kamakura and stopped by Tenshin-an for desserts. Naturally, there was a queue since the Kamakura area is quite popular with tourists. I filled in my name on the waiting list and waited to be called.
After a short while, I was led inside and seated at a table on the tatami mat floor. As is customary, footwear had to be removed before stepping onto the tatami. Once seated, I was handed the menu and placed my order. The staff then mentioned that I could explore the back of the restaurant while waiting. My curiosity piqued, I went to check it out and discovered a Zen Buddhism space called "Chazen Ichimi," featuring a window of enlightenment that overlooked their moss garden. The serene atmosphere gave off peaceful vibes and made for a beautiful photo opportunity.

Always wanted to experience the fun of Nagashi Somen, and I finally did! I had the Nagashi Somen with dip sauce, grated yam, tempura, and extra soup set (¥2600).
I arrived early, avoided the crowd, and had the entire place to myself. There’s no time limit for eating the somen, and they’re free-flow, so you can eat to your heart's content. The auntie owner slides the handmade somen down a stream of flowing water in a bamboo channel, and you have to catch it and eat it. Don’t worry, the flow is slow enough, giving you plenty of reaction time to catch the noodles. The auntie will also observe if you want more noodles before she drops them into the bamboo. Once you’re done, just let them know, and they’ll stop serving.
The dipping sauce was hearty and savoury, but it did get diluted over time due to the fresh water carried by the somen as you pick it up with your chopsticks. Since there’s no way to drain the water from the noodles, the sauce gradually loses its intensity. Still, it was a fun and enjoyable experience overall!
The tempura was crispy and included three vegetables, one shrimp, and one fish. The batter was light, crunchy, and not greasy at all, adding a tastisfying texture to the meal.
This unique somen experience is only available from April to the end of October, so plan your trip accordingly to avoid disappointment. Note that reservations are not accepted, and it’s cash only.

A wonderful place to relax after visiting Meigetsu-in, immersing yourself in its peaceful atmosphere.
Matcha Green Tea and Japanese Sweets (¥800)
Enjoy a warm cup of light matcha that’s not overly powdery while soaking in the serene tranquility of Meigetsu-in. The ambiance here is calm and charming, with lush greenery that’s truly a feast for the eyes. You can feel the zen emanating from this place.
Accompanying the tea is Izumo Zanmai, a triple-layered Japanese sweet. Each layer has a unique taste, texture, and colour, and when combined, they create a harmonious and delicious treat. The top layer, Rakugan, is made of sweet bean flour and powdered sugar, kneaded with a touch of water and dried, offering a delicate crunch. Yokan, the middle layer, is a sweet bean paste jelly that adds a smooth sweetness. Lastly, Gyuhi, made from rice flour kneaded with sugar and steamed, delivers a soft, chewy texture. The interplay of crunchiness, softness, and chewiness creates a delightful and tastisfying confectionary.
Cash Only.

Fabulous meal at this conveyor belt sushi restaurant, happily indulging in their oishii sushi. Each piece of sushi was handmade fresh on the spot, delivering a delicate and well-balanced flavour. The size was proportional, and the vinegared rice was particularly delicious. The quality was impressive, and I was pleased that the waiting time was short when I visited.
I enjoyed a variety of sushi, including Fatty Tuna, Sea Bream, Seabass, Fatty Mackerel, Unagi, Scallop, Snow Crab, Big Red Shrimp with Tomalley, Beef Tongue, and Golden Sushi. For sides, I had Oyster, Monkfish Liver, and Chawanmushi, and for desserts, I tried Jelly Cake, Coffee Jelly, and Soy Sauce Ice Cream.
The total came to ¥7084, which may seem like a lot, but it was worth every yen. Prices varied depending on the plate's pattern and colour, with the cheapest starting at ¥130 per plate.
The Soy Sauce Ice Cream was particularly interesting, sweet and salty in a pleasantly balanced way, with a slightly sandy texture. Most importantly, it tasted great.

Better known as Zong Zi or Rice Dumplings, this classic sweet-savoury sticky rice dumpling delivers the expected savoury and meaty flavours. However, the size was quite small, and sadly, it was served cold. If it had been hot, it could have been a comforting and tastisfying treat.😮💨

For the third and final leg of my Japan trip, I finally arrived in Kanagawa Prefecture after travelling through Okinawa and the Kyushu region for nearly two weeks. I went straight to visit Yokohama Chinatown after landing at Narita Airport.
While walking along the bustling streets of Chinatown, I came across a tiny Taiwanese snack shop and settled for a bowl of Mango Shaved Ice (¥600). The sweet, mango-flavoured, finely shaved ice was a cooling treat.

Have you gotten your matcha fix today?
I got the Matcha Freak (starting from RM 9), where you can customise your own matcha drink. First, you choose the intensity—Easy, Intermediate, or Advance. Naturally, the higher the level, the richer, thicker, and more bitter the matcha, with a corresponding increase in price. I gone for the Advance Level Matcha (RM 14) and added Coffee Jelly as the base (+RM 3) and Honeycomb (+RM 3) as a topping, bringing the total to RM 20.
The matcha is prepared on the spot, with the tea barista carefully scooping matcha powder into a matcha bowl, whisking it with a traditional matcha bamboo whisk, and then pouring it into a cup of fresh milk before adding the toppings. Loved the thick, hearty matcha flavour!
Since I had coffee jelly as the base, it was mixed with the milk. The coffee jelly was small and neat, easy to slurp through the straw, refreshing, and not at all bitter. The addition of honeycomb candy was a wonderful touch. It added a slightly buttery, caramel-like sweetness that enhanced the overall matcha flavour. For extra indulgence, I recommend waiting a bit for the honeycomb to melt into the drink.
