Hokkaido Milk Snow Ice Checked out the new Wan Mei 碗美 at Odeon Katong Shopping Complex — the establishment being one that specialises in snow ice and local and Chinese desserts; think items such as Black Sesame Paste, Chendol, Orh Nee, Chng Tng etc.; the location of the store being right beside The Whole Kitchen (itself also having expanded and taken the unit beside their original unit for a bigger dine-in space).
The star of the show here is undoubtedly the Snow Ice — a single page of the menu being dedicated to the eight different flavours that they have to offer here, ranging from locally-inspired flavours such as Peanut and Milo Dinosaur, to Japanese-inspired ones such as Matcha and Rockmelon. Patrons are also entitled to three different toppings and one sauce with each Snow Ice order — we opted for Attap Seed, Red Beans and Nata de Coco for our choice of toppings, and condensed milk as the sauce to go with our Snow Ice. The Snow Ice here is done in a style similar to Taiwanese shaved ice; shaved in layers, there was no denying on how milky the shaved ice was — rich and thick while we were rather surprised how the condensed milk sauce wasn’t overly sweet. The toppings were pretty pedestrian, though given the type of toppings we have chosen it would have been well within expectations, though it is interesting how they seem to serve kidney beans for the “red bean” topping — provides for an earthy note though personally felt a little overwhelming; would have preferred it to come with Azuki Red Bean Paste instead.
Didn’t get a chance to try the hot desserts such as the Orh Nee and Black Sesame Paste, nor the interesting sounding Yuzu Ice Granita since the dining partner wanted the Mango Pomelo Sago — perhaps those would be the items that I would be giving a try if I ever find myself ending up here next time.
