Nyonya Bites was more of an accidental find during our most recent trip to Golden Mile Food Centre β€” located at Level 1 of the food centre, Nyonya Bites occupies the former premises which One Prawn & Co used to be at in the food centre before its move to the current premises at MacPherson Road. Manned by a single auntie who seeks rondo all the work at the stall during our day of visit, there isn’t much of an indication of what the stall actually serves up β€” while a chalkboard with a handwritten menu on the specials available for the day exists at the stall above the display shelf, we did see a few dishes of Mee Siam that is not being mentioned being dished out to the patrons who are before us in the queue. Apart from some noodle and rice dishes, Nyonya Bites also serves up a small variety of Nyonya Kueh β€” the Nyonya Kueh available during our visit includes Kueh Talam, as well as a Tapioca Kueh.

We were actually surprised by the price of the Kueh Talam when we enquired the auntie about it upon ordering β€” retailed in boxes of two (2) pieces each, the Kueh Talam costs $1.50. On first look, the Kueh Talam does look as though it was freshly prepared by the folks of the stall rather than being pieces that are being supplied to them β€” this probably explains the small quantity and small variety of Nyonya Kueh available when we made our visit to Nyonya Bites on a weekday lunch service. For those whom are unaware of what a Kueh Talam is, the Kueh Talam is a kueh-kueh item that features two layers; a Pandan layer at the bottom accompanied with a coconut cream layer over the top.

Both layers of the Kueh Talam here was smooth and soft β€” was pretty chewy without being gelatinous and sticking all over the teeth; the Pandan layer carries a really evident hint of Pandan fragrance that really gave the Kueh Talam its flavour whilst not being overly sweet. The coconut cream layer over the top on the other hand complements the Pandan layer; the coconut cream carried an inherent saltish note almost similar to that of coconut water, only slightly stronger and richer due to cream element that has been included in the making of the mousse layer. The Kueh Talam does still feel particularly fresh even despite us purchasing them during standard lunch hour and consuming them on the spot, though as with all Nyonya Kueh it is always best to have them as early as possible. With Nyonya Kueh of such quality, the Kueh Talam is a great item to share around the table as a communal dessert to end the meal with; definitely will keep it in mind to give the other dishes and Nyonya Kueh that Nyonya Bites has to offer in my subsequent trip to Golden Mile Food Centre hopefully happening soon!
