I grew up eating Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee and it will always have a special place in my heart. I often say that if I ate their lor mee as the last meal of my life, I would die a happy man.
However, what I disliked was the 1 hour+ queue at Old Airport Road Hawker, and that it was often sold out before 1pm. So, I was really happy when Mr food king @ryanxgo partnered with the stall owners to expand, making it more accessible for everyone to have a taste of this food king good lor mee!
What makes or breaks a lor mee is its gravy, as it needs to balance all the strong flavours – the vinegar, sambal, chilli padi, coriander, garlic etc. @xmxlormee gravy had always achieved this consistently well, accentuating the flavours where required. What also sets them apart is the hand-peeled fish flakes and a bowl choked full of different things to eat.
I think the quality at Balestier is at 75%-80% of the level at the OG stall. It retains most of good stuff, but just lacks that little bit of oomph that I believe comes from the heart and soul of the uncles and aunties operating from a hawker stall since 1973.
Don’t get me wrong, it is still a satisfying bowl and I would definitely be back. However, if it was the last meal of my life, I think I would queue at the OG stall.
