Sushi, yakitori, oden and more!

The tendon craze has died down but Tenjin still remains as one of my fav places. The batter is light and everything was fried well. I particularly liked the fried shiso is because of how crispy and delicate it was and the prawns, which were really tasty and tender inside- not overcooked at all. Another thing I liked was that the tempura was only drizzled with sauce lightly, and there’s small bits of kombu on top of the rice.

I think that the Special “Jo” bowl was sufficient. It had veggies like eggplant, kabocha (Japanese pumpkin), lotus root, bell pepper, shiso leaf, mushroom, 2 prawns and a lovely fried free range egg that was oozy inside. The Premium “Toku-Jo” bowl, which had the same tempura as the Special bowl (minus the lotus), and the addition of anago, fish and crab leg. Personally feel that I could have done without the additional tempura, which cost $8 more and wasn’t very outstanding. Nonetheless, the tendons here are quite worth it as they come with a salad with a creamy sesame dressing and miso soup as well.

Their space is on the smaller side, but it‘s quite warm and cozy, and I enjoyed this meal!

I enjoyed the menchikatsu sando! It’s basically a soft fluffy potato croquette with specks of minced beef inside. And the standard sandwich topping of shredded lettuce and egg Mayo.

Overall my main gripe (apart from the price and size) is that the sando toppings are all pretty similar and so despite ordering 4 sandos, it tasted all somewhat homogenous. The sandwiches are all pleasant and I don’t dislike them, but I don’t think they warrant all the praises they’ve gotten. That said, I still want to dine in at Esora!

The tamago sando is not bad. It isn’t really anything life changing. There’s fluffy panko-crusted tamagoyaki and the same shredded lettuce egg mayo combi like in every sando. Delicious but not really a must try.

The gyukatsu sando was quite disappointing. Same ingredients as the tonkatsu, but didn’t feel like a thoughtful pairing. The shiso was too overpowering with the beef, and the beef was kind of tough. I’m not really willing to pay for the $88 omi wagyu to taste the difference either. Wish they had done another flavour for the beef!

I tried Esora’s sandwiches during the last dine-in ban because of the billions of reviews about how good they are. My verdict is that while they were decently yummy, they weren’t very extraordinary, particularly when you factor in the price and the size of the sandwich. Not really sure why people rave about it so strongly. It’s a taste of luxury from Esora for sure, but other than that, I can’t see why it’s so appealing. (I’m sure dining in is a whole other experience though, and I do want to try it.)

That said, my favourite was the tonkatsu. I thought that the floral taste of shiso paired the best with it and the shredded cabbage made me feel like I was eating tonkatsu w rice. The punchy mustard also toned down the flavour of the pork.

I love the yakitori at yatagarasu, but unfortunately it doesn’t hold up as well when taken away. The 10 stick yakitori set consists of double portions of the tail, thigh, wing, cartilage and gizzard. Sadly, you can’t choose what you want unless you order it in advance, but this selection sufficed! Everything was well seasoned and tasty, but obviously, yakitori tastes best fresh off the grill. When taken away, it loses its crisp, so I’d rather eat it when dining in is allowed again.
