I went back to funan for a hair appointment.
Enthused by my latest furor with this Teochew joint I decided to anchor my experience with another try . This time I had the small seafood soup as I wasn't confident in swallowing a lot of tasteless water. I had low expectations.
The umami in the soup alone was enough to leave me dumbfounded. I couldn't believe my taste buds. I had to go back for more just to realise this was not a dream.
The soup was just the beginning. As I had ordered the pumpkin rice, I had a carb to fill me up in case the soup wasn't hearty enough. The pumpkin rice is so good it can stand on its own. It's garnished generously with some kind of seafood crisp , whitefish and some onion. But the seafood garnish really pushed the rice envelope to the extreme. I believe it may have been scallops . Next time. I am going for the XXL bowl. As u can tell, there will be another review, as the best is yet to come.
Chanced upon this place when searching for a place in Funan to eat . I regularly go to funan for all kinds of chill out activities and of course eating n shopping.
This porridge surprised me. Typically fish porridge is ur watery affair with pepper to make it slightly less tasteless. This was a flavorbomb. There was so much umami packed into one tiny bowl it had me in awe. The chunky meat cake they added in was the real kicker, and the tangy chinchalok sauce that comes with , kept me wanting more. The fish pieces are average . But the broth is what made me decide to stalk Yan Ji on instagram and blow up my staffs feeds of my not very beguiling looking lunch. Go for the wallet friendly price. Stay for your taste buds.
