chanced upon this coffeeshop next to Beo market. their small portion certainly isnt small. I could barely finish this for breakfast. theres an option of curry or clear gooey sauce and I went for the latter. its not super flavourful, but the star has got to be those supee crispy air fried tofu strips - its even layered much like a crepe cake for added texture.
pretty pricey for a small bun, but the otah to bread ratio is still generous. ive been having CMC’s otah buns since i was a kid and this sure brings back great memories.
the place has underwent a renovation and its less gloomy and stuffy, with added outdoor seats. prices have increased but standards have dropped a little. the coffee is still rich, kaya still has the same rustic home-made texture, and eggs perfectly jiggly. but the bread was neither warm nor toasted. and it just somehow lacks that smokey flavour it used to have.
Didn't know such huge cockles exist. Just look at them compared to the 50 cent coin. Apart from shiokness of munching into a huge cockle, actually prefer the smaller ones from local hawkers which has a more briney flavour.
Was pleasantly surprised to find a dish like that in Singapore, as I've only ever encountered it in London. The duck confit was legit with moist meat and paper-thin skin. The waffle wasn't merely a vessel, but a star on its own. Nice egg with a oozy yolk. Just wished for more honey.
A deadly plate with artery clogging fats and carcinogenic over charred crust. But yes it was all worth it.
Another awesome dish from Char. Bite sized deboned cubes of pork coated with thick sticky salted egg sauce. So addictive you could munch on them neat.
Of course everyone comes for their namesake, that glistening charred char siew that no doubt is the star and a must-order. But their zi char dishes fared pretty well too. This was a generous portion of stir fried beef with a good smokey char. Picked the spring onion sauce that was great. Good for downing white rice.
