The recent rainy weather is perfect for a good bowl of chicken curry noodles like this. I tried the Curry Chicken Noodles ($6 for medium) from Do Po Hainanese Chicken Rice & Curry Chicken Noodle recently and it did not disappoint.
The curry is not very thick but it is smooth and full of flavour. The soft tau pok, pork skin (yes there is pork skinš!) and noodles are deliciously soaked in the curry. The chicken is also very tender and the fried chilli that is served on the side is very fragrant. This is so comforting and not jelak at all - love it!
The xiao long bao ($5 for 7) from Flourful Delight are huge! They are definitely bigger than the usual ones I have in various restaurants and the price is very reasonable given the generous portion. The skin is thin, the pork filling is well-seasoned and each bite brings a burst of flavourful broth. Good stuff!
Finally tried the Hokkien Mee ($6) from Youfu Fried Hokkien Prawn Noodle at Golden Mile Food Centre (#01-57) a while ago, after coming across many reviews of it. Although the wok hei is not as strong as I like it to be, it is still quite flavourful and there is a generous amount of prawns, squid and pork belly. The noodles soak up the sauce and go well with the two types of chilli provided - one is more tangy than the other but both are equally fiery. Overall, not the best Iāve tried but still a pretty decent plate of Hokkien Mee!
This is probably the best pasta I ever had in a hawker centre! Chef Choo Signature is a western food stall at Golden Mile Food Centre (#B1-45) and it is helmed by Chef Choo, a former chef at five-star hotels such as Regent and Grand Hyatt.
I decided to try the daily special: Japanese Scallops Fettuccine with Spicy White Wine Garlic Sauce ($12.90). The fettuccine is al dente and each strand of pasta is thoroughly coated in the rich and garlicky white wine sauce. The flavour and aroma are on point and the scallops are plump and fresh. The portion is quite generous as well.
This might not be the cheapest food you can find in a hawker centre, but it is very worth it - so good!
Hainan Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee is a stall at Golden Mile Food Centre (#B1-34) that sells the dry version of hokkien mee ($5). Compared to the other hokkien mee I have tried, this version is alot less saucy, it uses thin bee hoon instead of thick bee hoon but it is still quite deliciousš¤¤ The wok hei is prominent, the springy noodles absorb the flavourful prawn broth and fragrance of the garlic completely and the spicy chilli gives it a kick. No regrets queuing for this:)!
The bright red colour of the Soup Tulang Merah ($10 + $2 for bread) from Haji Kadir Food Chains (Golden Mile Food Centre #B1-13/15) was not the most appetising sight at first glanceš Armed with plastic gloves, straw and a resolve to not stain my shirt, I dug into the mutton bone marrow stew and it was surprisingly good. The sauce was sweet and spicy and it was a great dip for the bread. Although the bones did not have a lot of meat, it was quite satisfying to gnaw the bits of meat directly off the bones. The meat was tender and it was not gamy (I think the sauce helped!). The jelly-like marrow inside the bone can be sucked out with the help of a straw and few knocks on the bone. Achievement unlockedš¬!
Itās quite uncommon to find herbal roasted duck in hawker centers. The Herbal Roasted Duck ($12 for quarter) from YaLoh Herbal Roast Duck at Golden Mile Food Centre is tender and juicy and the sweet and savoury herbal sauce goes really well with rice. We also ordered braised tofu and roasted duck head for sides and they are drizzled in a rich dark sauce. Pretty good and affordable!
