Western Singapore

If you find yourself in the far west, here's an idea for a pocket-friendly lunch. Even though it's tucked away in an industrial estate in Joo Koon, this Muslim-owned zi char stall draws a steady queue of lunch-goers with their tasty Halal fare. Previously known as Alex, before he converted to Islam when he married his wife, stall owner Ridhuan was actually a Chinese zi char cook for many years. You won't go wrong with his bestselling Butter Cream Chicken ($4 or $4.50 with rice). Despite being slicked in a rich cream sauce aromatic with curry leaves, the chicken skin still sports a nice crackle, and the meat was very tender. Another dish to try is his signature Green Chilli Fry Rice ($4), which sees the addition of green chilli to enliven what would otherwise be regular sambal fried rice. The portion size is generous, and good to share among two small eaters.

Longtime fans of the West Coz Cafe in West Coast Plaza — rejoice! The restaurant has opened a second outlet conveniently located in Yew Tee Point, making it a great zi char option for family meals on the weekends, or for a hearty meal with friends. If you're coming in a group of four or more, opt for the Set Menu B ($73.80) — you get to pick one fish, meat, seafood, vegetable and side dish from the selected items. Rice and drinks are included as well. The popular Curry Fish Head ($16 for small, $19 for large) is a hit amongst the customers, but the Assam Curry Fish Head ($16 for small, $19 for large) is even tastier. You'll be mopping up every bit of the spicy and tangy sauce with your rice!
Avg Price: $20 per person

One of our top pick when it comes to curry fish head. Despite only half of the fish head on the plate, the portion is still considered very generous for the price.

Fish head curry is a dish that brings families and friends together for a great feast. If you are somewhere at West Coast Plaza formerly known as Ginza Plaza, come to West Coz Cafe. Their Curry Fish Head is a must have otherwise the meal will not be complete.
If you like your curry less coconut, this is the place for you. If you love your curry to be spicy, this is the cafe you must try. Cover your rice with the curry and Dark sauce, your will definitely go for second serving for your rice.
Pricing is super reasonable. Food quality is good but service is ok lah... ... it's always crowded.
Overall, it's worth the wait.
Tastes very homecooked in a good way! Cos I miss eating homecooked food.

Our family’s go-to place for some authentic kick-ass cendol at my neighbourhood, Cendol Melaka’s version isn’t cloying rich yet still as sinful. The perfect sweet ending to any meal, their’s come highly customizable with different combinations for the toppings (red bean, corn, glutinous rice and durian puree). The classics go for under $2 but addition of ice cubes and shaved ice are chargeable for an additional 20cents and 30cents respectively. And with just the three basic components - coconut milk, gula melaka and pandan flavoured vermiform noodle (cendol), the simple dessert can be enjoyed in any weather. Sweet and slightly salty, I love mine with a mound of red bean paste; the thick gula melaka with its complex sweetness is so shiok when accompanied by the punch of lingering pandan fragrance from the slippery-smooth cendol strands. The coconut milk was also refreshing and thirst-quenching which is balanced by the natural caramelised flavour of the liquid palm sugar.

Food was cold, chili was overly sweet. Truly a powerless Nasi Lemak. Over-rated.
There’s always a perpetual queue at this stall, during lunch time. It’s not that hard to figure out why - The chicken wing, ikan kuning, ikan bilis and omelette @ Latiffa Huri, are fried to perfection accompanied by the fragrant coconut rice. I’ve got to pester my colleagues to come and check it out soon!

Nothing bests their recommended Spring Chicken Meal as it’s freshly fried upon order. What’s more? The meat is tender and juicy served perfectly with coleslaw and mashed potato with gravy. ❤️ #burpple
