Bucket List: Taiwan
Yes. Just, yes.
Don't make the same mistake as I did, combing the aisles of Raohe Night Market multiple times in search of this fried milk stall with no success – you'll find it on the outskirts of the market where the back entrance is.
Freshly submerged in bubbling oil upon order, each stick of three blocks of milk curd emerges crispy on the outside and gooey inside; it's almost like mochi, but not as smooth and with a bouncier bite.
Japanese rolled omelette with corn and bits of lobster flesh tucked within its folds, topped with Kewpie, seaweed sprinkles and bonito flakes. Be prepared for a long wait for this!
No photography or video-taking allowed at this popular stall located in the middle of Raohe Night Market. Don't know why, because it's not like they were doing anything groundbreaking 🤷🏻♀️ .
You'll find one of these stalls in just about every night market in Taipei, where slabs of beef are snipped into cubes and grilled all around with a blowtorch. They do a pretty nice job of it, leaving the middle pink and juicy while the edges sport a crusty char. At NT$100 per serving, it's no wonder this is one of the most popular street snacks you'll find.
(70ntd) THE CHICKEN HERE IS SO DARN THICK AND JUICY! And batter was crisp for a long time without that fatty greasy feel. Got the 微辣 which is the least spicy of all but the heat was still a bit too much lolllll, so thank goodness we got their red tea latte too for an additional 40ntd. Will defo be back again to go for the non-spicy one!
At 100/200ntd for a good portion of beef cubes, 火焰牛is one of my favourite street food. Grilled, cut and blowtorched on the spot till brown, with your choice of seasoning (we always go for the usual salt and pepper); the beef cubes are kept juicy and tender! #burpple
Was waiting for our movie time slot and came by for dessert! Not that I’ve had that many souffle pancakes, but this was definitely one of the best ones I've had. So wobbly smooth and as fluffy as a cloud, it wasn’t overly eggy but had a good balance of egg and milk fragrance. Melts in your mouth too! Best part was it had just the right amount of sweetness which you can further add on to with the cup of maple syrup. There’s a minimum order of one dish per diner and each pancake dish comes with a free drink (unfortunately weren’t fantastic). Be prepared to wait if you’re there during the peak hours as the kitchen can only churn out a limited number of these every hour.

Wanbing is a small little stall located on one of the streets you’ll pass by while on your way to the port for Cijin Island 旗津岛. It prides itself for serving up these healthier sweet treats that are made fresh daily without the use of preservatives, etc. They cleverly switch up the 2 flavours on the menu daily (sometimes dependent on available seasonal ingredients) and that’s why I went back 4 times in the week I was in Kaoshiung! I was basically just checking their Instagram daily (@wanbing_maruhama) for the updates. 😂 They don’t just serve usual flavours like matcha and mango, but unique ones like whiskey, milk cheese, rose milk and calpis. All 4 times we had both flavours and not one disappointed us! Psttt, get the cup and you'll also be able to get the cone for free!
