This place was recommended to me by my brother’s Girlfriend, who’s from JB. Apparently, they sold their recipe to Dian Xiao Er chain? Or smth like that. Anyways, back to the food. The duck was great! It was savoury and flavourful. There are about 3 kinds of different herbal duck you can order, and we ordered the dang gui flavoured duck (there was no rationale for the choice we just anyhow pick hahaha)
Just a side note, there are a lot of pigeons near ya Wang haha so those humans with pigeon phobia YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
Restoran Ya Wang has a total belly score of *drumroll*: 4/5
Our JB adventures brought us to Restoran todak, a seafood restaurant in JB that is situated in a kelong. It is about a 30 minute drive from the checkpoint (about 17-23 rm if you grab there).
The seafood was cheap. BUT, don’t expect to be treated like royalty! Getting a table was crazy and hawker centre style, we had to camp and hover around tables that were finishing up. Getting the waiter’s attention was also a challenge, and half the time they couldn’t be bothered to serve you. We had to physically get up from our seat and call the waiter over. There are also no menus so... good luck ordering! Our chilli crab took about 45 minutes to arrive and we were exhausted after the meal from looking for a table and waiting for the food.
If you are bored of the regular haunts at in JB, do hop over to todak for a real experience of Malaysian dining!
Todak seafood has a total belly score of 2.5/5
Blessed with short queue times for this BKT, we ate here even though we heard there were better BKT elsewhere as it was convenient and close to KSL. To me the broth was yummy and not too heavy! Dress light as the restaurants ventilation is not in tip top condition and it might get hot and sweaty. Remember to order the taukee and other ingredients as add-ons as the BKT itself does not come with them. [We only realised this when our BKT was served :( ]
The food here tasted really homely. My first bite of the fried chicken brought back memories of my aunt's hainanese pork chop as the batter tasted really similar! The potato wedges were not the crispy but were the soggy kind. Definitely drop by here at least once when visiting JB and order the fried chicken with mushroom sauce.
To be honest I only visited the cafe cuz bae and I were exhausted from queueing at customs. Thought the place would be good as it had been recommended by some blogs. However the cakes made me sad. The chocolate peanut cake was too hard and the cheesecake was ok. Overall the cakes are quite cute lah but I wouldn't come back as it was definitely not worth the price.
Researched on some blogs on good food in JB and this popped up. There was a queue when we reached but thankfully we only waited about 15-25 minutes for a table... The couple queueing before us had waited for almost an hour! The fish head curry actually tasted just normal, the curry here is slightly runny and they only gave half a fish head. The curries in Sg usually give a whole head with thicker curry. However the runny curry matched well with the rice and we spammed the sauce with rice. The highlight of the dish was the taukee, do order an extra plate of that if you visit.
