Perched above one of the old shophouses, Shuang Xi (which translates to Double Happiness) is truly a bar unlike any other. Open for close to two months now, this is probably the most under-the-radar bar in KL, and one I wish would remain hidden! Having said that, I really enjoyed my night here. Heads up — for a bar that claims it is #notspeakeasy, it’s really darn hard to find this place lor. Thankful that they have a Facebook page where reservations are highly encouraged to be made via DM. The location instructions are as vague as “find Public Bank”. Run by a brother-sister duo (the former a photographer and vintage collector, the latter a tattoo artist) and a few friends, no one will make you feel more at home in a bar than these guys. They are responsible for the welcoming vibes here with an impressive collection of vintage furniture and knick-knacks to match. I think it’s important for me to note that these guys also work voluntarily. Where the money earned from your drinks goes only to rental, supplies and a small foundation for young, emerging artists in the city. So yes, tipple away without feeling guilty!

Replacing old Barlai is this new bar specialising in all things gin. If you’re not sure of what to have, I’d suggest to start easy with Pahit’s sous vide fruit-infused G&Ts, simple yet delicious approach to gin. Or ask the friendly bartenders to mix you up something. Drop in for a quick drink after work or stay and take in the relaxed atmosphere.

This new member of the TPG team (Private Room, TTDI) family is a contemporary take on 1920s Shanghai late night bar oozing oriental elegance and old school charm. The cocktails here incorporate Asian flavour combinations like pandan, yuzu and chrysanthemum which you will find in the the Bunga Kaseh (RM36), a combination of chrysanthemum juice, Tanqueray gin and pandan syrup, or Mr Brightside (RM45) blend of elderflower syrup, egg white, lime juice and yuzu juice that makes for a citrusy combination with a lingering aftertaste. Both impressive and highly recommended. If you must drive, parking is ample in this vicinity.
