New Restaurants, Cafes And Bars in KL: June 2015
Greenhouse by Muir is a food hall that serves practically everything you can think of — from pastries to seafood, coffee and desserts. This is the perfect place for bigger groups, as the wide variety is certain to cater to all. Sashimi lovers can even get their cravings fixed here! It follows the Ikea style of self-service where you pick up a trolley near the entrance and order your food, or pick up ready-to-eat plates at various sections. Burpple Tastemaker Carol recommends their Japanese-inspired red velvet and chocolate pastries!
Proof Cafe & Sky Lounge opens its doors each morning at 6.30am everyday. Yup, you read that right. If you're an early riser looking to fill your tummy, this could be a life saver for you! Most dishes here are Melbourne-inspired and curated by head chef Jia Yuan, who has worked in Melbourne for a few years. Burpple Tastemaker Tracey loves the baked eggs served with two slices of toast. This place also has a great view of Sri Hartamas, making it the perfect spot to start your day, or for daytime dates and meetups!
Don't worry, there's nothing fishy here, it's a hangout zone for you all you coffee junkies out there! Don't miss out on their signature Fishee Ball oreo-based cheesecake, presented in the shape of a fish and coated with dark chocolate sauce. Also try their waffle with banana slices and chocolate ice cream for that lovely hot-cold contrast.
Having ridiculous cravings for pork? From brunch items to pasta, steaks and burgers, Pink Belly is a Western joint serves everything with pork — including their ice cream (RM15)! For the main course, go for the Pork Risotto (RM25) topped with juicy, irresistible pork belly slices. Wash it all down with an ice cold beer, just ask the waiter for their house selection! Great for an indulgent boys' night out ;)
BRATS is a new minimalist spot in Paramount Garden specialising in hot dogs. The founder was inspired by the hot dogs from his experiences living outside of Malaysia, and decided to bring the hotdog scene to town. They currently have pork, chicken and beef hotdogs for RM16 each, with toppings of your choice. Each hot dog comprises 70% meat, 10% fat and 20% toppings all nestled in a soft bun. Go for the poutine (RM15) to accompany your hot dogs, and finish off with any one of their international beers from Australia, Belgium, Japan and Germany (RM18 - 24).
The League of Captains is founded by the good people behind Pestle & Mortar, and it's name inspired by two cafes in Melbourne: Captains of Industry and the League of Honest Coffee. Located along Jalan Doraisamy, the arrival of this cafe/boutique has brightened up The Row with their minimalist ceiling-high glass and clean black frames. Swing by for their lunch sets like Corned Beef & Cream Cheese Sandwich (RM18) along with any cuppa of your choice, and simply head upstairs for a spot of shopping too!
The Crusty Nest is a new hit in SS15 bringing pies to you from sweet to savory. For RM12, Burppler Lydia suggests that you go for The Wedding Cheesecake which has a "mild cheesecake flavour and sourness from lemon and orange", a great light treat after a meal!
Whoa, the soft serve trend is still going strong! Every Sundae is another dessert bar serving soft gelato in Damansara Uptown. Aside from serving ice cream in a classic cone or cup, they also provide a choice of 4 bases for your ice cream: orange crepe, giant choux, giant cookie and Belgium waffles. You then select a soft serve gelato flavour along with toppings and sauces. How good does that sound? Not many places allow for this kind of customisation, head down and try a few combinations to find your favourite!
Wicked Pancake Parlour is an extension of Yellow Brick Road downstairs, which has seen an unending crowd since their opening. Whether you're craving for simple pancakes or something with a little twist to it, this is your haven. Go for the Peter Pandan (RM24) for a local kick to your pancakes — served with jackfruit, salted caramel ice cream and gula Melaka! They also serve coffee and other drinks to go with your pancake binge session. This place truly is wicked.
Streaky Hot Dogs is taking hot dogs to a whole new level. Order off their menu or customise your own unique dog — sweet, savoury, spicy — they have it all. This is just the spot to have some fun with your food, you can even create a whacky combination like pork bockwurst sausage topped with marshmallows and chocolate, just as the adventurous Burpple Tastemaker Foodroll did! A more sensible option would be the Shrooms (RM14.50) — a toasted bun with pork bockwurst topped with a medley of mushrooms. Tip: order a side of chilli cheese fries to complete your meal!
Chuckles has local, Western, Italian and fusion cuisine all over its menu, making it pretty tough to decide on what to order. From ayam percik to carbonara, seafood marinara, local delights and their versions of Western favourites, the list is never-ending (we haven't even gotten to their mocktails)! Go for their unique curry carbonara (Curry Chuckbonara, RM20) for a little fusion flavour, or the Chicka Chicken Basil (RM23.00) for a Western dish. Add calamari rings (RM12.00) on the side and finish off with a Lychee Virgin Mojito (RM9.00). With such a wide variety, this is a great spot for groups of friends — there's something here for just about anyone!
