I'm so so so happy to discover that this stall actually opens on Saturday, because it's the dish that I miss most after I stopped working at Raffles Place. It's a breakfast-only item on weekdays (the shop sells soy sauce chicken rice in the afternoon), but apparently it's available till about 2pm on Saturdays. I can never get over how flavourful the bee hoon is on its own, and it just gets even more amazing with those cubes of lard and slivers of meat.
It was a path that one took that one cannot just go back anymore. The pork slices were the most tender one I had ever ate, cooked to the optimal temperature, it was incredibly easy to eat. With the free flow of chili available, one is able to dip the pork into the sauce as much as he or she wants. Bonus item was the braised pork rice which my fellow intern recommended. In my opinion it was comparable to those that I had ate in Taiwan and was definitely good. The fatty pork given was sufficient and not overwhelming. At $5.80, it is a little pricey, but it is the quality that makes up for it!
The stall starts selling them only at noon, yet when I arrived at 12.20pm yesterday, the fish heads were all accounted for. Had to turn up at 11.45am for this! The lady used to start selling this dish at 10.30am when the stall opens, but I suppose they've adjusted the timing to give the working crowd some fighting chance against the ah peks and ah mas. I really love the peppery and slightly vegetal quality of the soup here, but more importantly, the batang fish they use is meatier and cut thicker for more oomph than the usual toman. =D
PS. On the teh-o and calamansi-derived iced lemon tea side of things, I'm pleased to report that the grouchy drink stall auntie smiles at me and will comment "很久没有来hor?" if I miss a week. *beams*
The lor mee stall does a mean chicken chop that's reminiscent of the ones we used to have at Sunshine Plaza. I'm not fond of the bland mee sua-esque noodles, so imma just gonna order chicken chop ($3) next time. =D
Fortune Food just nails it every time with their consistency – a good balance of sweet and spicy, and the all-important crunchiness from toasted peanuts and crispy dough bits. And what's the point of going to Chinatown at night if I don't get beer? Smith Street Taps was closed, but the cheap swigs at On Tap aren't shabby too.
The food here is even better than I remembered. Everyone on my IG feed seems to be feasting on Hokkien mee this week, so I've been craving my fave la la Hokkien mee the past couple of days. Heh. And while we're at it, we got the lard-heavy Penang char kway teow for good measure. X=
