Dessert
Taiwanese ice cream concept Coolplay Soft Serve opens an outlet in Toa Payoh, serving their signature moustached soft serve. Flavours include Heavy Chocolate, Whisky Vanilla, Matcha and Strawberry, with the option to mix two flavours as well. Single flavours cost $4.50 while a dual flavour swirl would cost $5, and you can have your soft serve on either a cup or cone for the same price! Go for the Whisky Vanilla, but take your photo fast — the ice cream melts really quickly!
Essentially vanilla ice cream resting atop an Oreo cookie post-apocalyptic wasteland, with earthen heat still radiating from the heated frying pan. Have the cookies warm as they are served, smash them into crumbs and have warm cookie cereal, or mix the crumbs with the ice cream for a cold cookies & cream experience. Any way you like, really. Bring friends for sharing, as the dessert has really a lot of Oreo love to give. 3.7/5

This popular dessert chain from Thailand specialises in premium ice cream clothed in a coat of soft, chewy mochi. While the robust Thai milk tea was absolutely on the money, the matcha was too milky for my liking (a stronger green tea punch, please!) and the mango was nothing to shout about.
Resist temptation and let these thaw for an extra minute (in addition to the recommended 1 minute by the affable staff) to truly enjoy the texture of the mochi.
Not only is this the most elegant looking chendol I've ever seen but it's finely crafted in every way too.
The green squiggles of chendol are made in-house from scratch and because they do not use gelatin, the forming process is due to sub-zero freezing. This creates micro ice crystals which give them a very subtle crunch.
The pandan-flavoured chendol is joined by the gula melaka and light coconut ice-cream (also housemade) to create a sublime interpretation of this popular dessert.
Feeling a little down under the weather & wanted something hot to warm myself. Sakura Latté tasted something like cherry however a little too sweet for my liking.
If you've tried and fallen in love with the coconut ice cream served in husks when you visited Thailand and miss it desperately, don't despair – you can now get it at Pong! Get their bestseller – Coconut Gelato and Sorbet ($5.50) with toppings like corn, red ruby and nata de coco in a flesh-filled coconut husk, served with a cup of fresh coconut juice. Their coconut gelato is smooth, creamy and dairy-free, and their sorbets made from fresh fruits complement the gelato well. It might not be as good as the one you get at Chatuchak, but it makes for a perfect pick-me-up on a warm day.
I had the matcha lava cake as well as the white chocolate w taro one for $7.90 each, and boy was it good. What I love about their lava cakes was that it definitely wasn't too sweet, delicate enough to leave me reaching back for another bite. Also, the ice cream paired well with the lava cakes and the crunchy cereal topping gave an nice change in texture as well.
Thick toast comes served in the presentation pictured, then dissected by the staff carefully after you are done with all the photo-taking by moving the top layer down revealing the insides and it is ready to eat after smothering all the sauces and ice-cream before eating. This version comes with Matcha sauce and Vanilla Ice-Cream atop with a macaron shell for aesthetics. Matcha sauce was of the right proportion of bitter and sweet for the dessert and the whole combination worked really well with the light sweet flavours of the honey toast. The only gripe was the macaron shell that seemed a little bit too soft that it was rather limp.
