Small Bites
3.5 munchies: Sink your teeth into one of these impeccably deep-fried slivers and it’s impossible to stop at one. The savoury goodness made me want to pair it with a cold pint of beer! If only the salted egg sauce were coated evenly on the salmon skin, though. #Burpproved
3.5 munchies: Who'd have expected the stuffed Roman-style pizza to be the stand-out dish at this traditional Italian tavern? Each portion of the crusty flatbread is sandwiched with oozy, melted pecorino cheese and aromatic black truffle, making it a palate-pleasing starter for sharing! #Burpproved
4 munchies: There's a reason why a long queue is always spotted at this stall – the gu chai kueh (Chinese chives), soon kueh (turnip), and png kueh (glutinous rice) are handmade fresh daily and stuffed with generous fillings. While the steamed kuehs taste just as great, I'd highly recommend you to get the ones that are pan-fried to order for a crisp exterior and chewy interior. Be sure to grab a few boxes home early because they sell out by 2-3pm each day! #BurppleBestofJurong #Burpproved
2 munchies: Imagine the moment the dish lands on the table, the first thing you notice is the layer of oil that sits at the bottom of the bowl. The Crispy Octopus was so greasy that there was hardly any crunch on the batter. Coated with salted egg butter sauce, I thought the salted egg flavour could have been more pronounced, though. In retrospect, perhaps not since the overall dish was already so heavy.
3 munchies: Coated evenly with egg batter and fried to golden brown, there was a thin layer of kaya sandwiched between the toast that gave it a light coconut fragrance. It'd have been a great French Toast if it had a more crisp exterior, though. Do drizzle the honey syrup sparingly because its texture is really thick and was a tad sweet for my liking.
Having been around since 1953, I was informed that this place "created" the original HK-style milk tea using 5 different types of tea leaves. Unfortunately, it lacked the richness and strong tea fragrance I was expecting to savour. It now ranks second from the bottom of my list; worst being Kam Wah Cafe at Mong Kok. While I find the milk tea Tai Hing Roast Restaurant remains unbeatable to-date, do let me know if you have other contenders to recommend below!
4.5 munchies: Deep-fried to golden brown perfection, the light batter revealed crunchy white onions with a tinge of natural sweetness. The strong-flavoured salted egg yolk custard sauce was absolutely smashing – savoury, creamy, and had the right consistency. It even comes with a small metal dish that contains more of the divine sauce – perfect for dunking in other sides like fries and cauliflower fritters! #Burpproved
3.5 munchies: Using a plump pork bratwurst known for its succulent bite and robust meatiness, it is featured as a standard anchor in 3 of the 4 main dishes served at this one-week-old grab-and-go kiosk. My top pick goes to the Cheezy Mushroom – made of white button mushrooms and chopped garlic sautéed in chicken stock. It also features a blanket of gooey raclette cheese that is melted and scraped right onto the hotdog upon order!
4 munchies: Oozing with melted mozzarella and cheddar, these chunky egg rolls cradled a moist, soft-scrambled interior that serve as an excellent side dish for any meal of the day. The honey mustard added sweetness and zing to the omelette, offering a sweet contrast (or ending) to the savoury stews that this place is known for – the spicy seafood stew and pork rib stew are my favourites. #Burpproved
4 munchies: Buttery, smoky corn rubbed in ancho-lime mayonnaise, Cotija cheese, and chilli pepper. Loved how the strong-flavoured cheese complemented the sweet and spicy flavours. Squeeze some lime for that extra tang and tartness before serving! #Burpproved
3 munchies: The freshly baked Pretzel Croissant might be all flaky and buttery, but the crunchy top scattered with toasted sesame seeds was a tad salty for my liking. Nevertheless, it was best served warm and paired with City Bakery's signature hot chocolate. Just add $2.50 for the super fluffy homemade marshmallow that sits on top of the drink! #munchinginNY
4 munchies: Topped with smokey pepperoni and smothered generously with three types of cheese – gruyere, mozzarella and Parmesan, I liked how the fries were cut thick not only for a good bite, but also for getting more of the gooey cheese on them. The house-made bacon ketchup served at the side was absolutely smashing; it was sweet-savoury with hints of smokey bacon and caramelised onion flavours.
Pair this sinful bar bite with a couple of bottles of craft beers (I recommend the Tuatara APA & Castaway IPA) and you're set for a chill night by the bay! #Burpproved
4.5 munchies: The smashing combo of ngoh hiang and cuttlefish kueh pie tee served at CreatureS is something my Peranakan mama (grandma) would approve of if she were still around. Wrapped in crispy and slightly chewy beancurd skin, the ngoh hiang was stuffed full of juicy homemade minced pork and prawn. The kecap manis to go with the roll was also excellent.
Instead of the usual sliced prawn, cuttlefish was used to bring out the sweet and savoury flavours in the crunchy shredded turnip. Be sure to top the pie tee with its house-made chilli sauce for some spicy and garlicky punch! #Burpproved
